4. August 2021SSI Schäfer automates the new warehouse of Mathem in the Swedish Larsboda. Together with the e-commerce in the grocery retail sector in the Scandinavian countries, the online grocery retailer Mathem is growing at a rapid pace. The establishment of the new logistics facility in Larsboda, in the south of Stockholm, is an important part of the further expansion.
(Neunkirchen/Larsboda) Mathem established itself as an online grocery retailer in 2007. Since then, the company has experienced massive expansion with an ever-increasing number of returning customers. Business operations are currently conducted in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and their surroundings.
The offering of the online grocery retailer is constantly changing and evolving. Therefore, a high degree of flexibility is a must. Additionally, the solution should meet the increased customer demands regarding short-term availability, which was one of the main reasons for the project. The intralogistics specialist SSI SCHÄFER was selected due to its flexibility and adaptability to Mathem’s business requirements and economic goals.
High Growth in the Grocery Sector
“E-commerce in the grocery sector is an exciting area where we have observed significant growth worldwide, especially during the past year. Mathem is a very important project for SSI SCHÄFER. It clearly shows that we can deliver the highest efficiency in the market segment where we see continuous growth. It is exciting to contribute and support Mathem in achieving its goals,” explains Hans Ekström, Solution Design Manager Automation at SSI SCHÄFER.
With the project at Mathem, SSI SCHÄFER is positioning itself even more strongly in the e-commerce sector for groceries. Due to larger orders and the associated higher capacity requirements, the prerequisites for automated solutions in the grocery e-commerce sector are higher than in regular online retail. Through several larger projects in the Scandinavian countries, SSI SCHÄFER has already gained extensive experience in automation in the grocery sector. For example, SSI SCHÄFER is delivering the largest automation solution in Europe for Coop and a facility with a strong focus on sustainability for ASKO.
Solution Developed in a Short Time – Start Planned for 2022
“In a short time and in close collaboration with SSI SCHÄFER, we were able to find a solution that allows us to continue our great growth trajectory and achieve our economic goals. Every day, tens of thousands of items need to be picked in all combinations as quickly as possible and delivered to our customers. The solution will also create the best possible working environment for our employees in Sweden. We have come a long way and had to make many important decisions, but now the real work begins to achieve our goals,” says Henrik Peitz, COO at Mathem.
The assembly work will start in the fall. The new building is expected to be operational in the second half of 2022.
