6. August 2021Hamburg’s logistics companies are pioneers in climate protection. To achieve the new climate goals of Germany and the EU, companies are increasingly relying on electric mobility and renewable fuels. One third of logistics companies in Hamburg use purely electric drives. This was revealed by a recent survey conducted by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.
(Hamburg) One in five logistics companies relies on hydrogen-based or fuel cell drives. The use of synthetic fuels (16 percent) and biofuels (12 percent) is also being applied or considered to achieve climate goals.
15 percent of the surveyed companies have not yet planned any concrete climate protection measures. The biggest obstacles to switching to alternative drives are primarily the lack of supply infrastructure, high acquisition costs, and poor planning due to unfavorable political framework conditions. “The new national and European climate goals mean significant investments for logistics companies,” says Willem van der Schalk, Vice President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. “To provide companies with investment and planning security, reliable political framework conditions and a technology-open approach to promote climate-friendly drive concepts across all modes of transport are needed,” adds Axel Plaß, Chairman of the Association of Hamburg Forwarders.
Economic Situation Viewed More Positively
Hamburg’s logistics companies assess the general economic situation significantly more positively than a year ago. 42.7 percent are in a good economic position. A year ago, it was only 3.9 percent. However, Hamburg’s logistics companies also see significant risks for future economic development. Risk factors include the unpredictable course of the Corona pandemic and the associated supply chain issues, as well as government restrictions, particularly the continuing rise in energy and raw material prices. About half of the companies also expect that prices for logistics services will rise in the future.
