(Berlin/Mainz, August 11, 2021) The strike of the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) in the rail freight transport of Deutsche Bahn can have massive impacts on supply chains for the German and European industry. Currently, around 190 freight trains are in backlog.
DB fears that the strike could cause lasting damage to climate-friendly rail freight transport, as customers might shift their transport back to road during this situation.
Essential Supply Trains Could Be Operated
So far, DB Cargo has managed to operate the essential supply trains with great effort. These are economically important trains that supply power plants and large industrial companies. To ensure transport, DB Cargo is also cooperating with railway companies in Germany and Europe. Currently, operations are affected nationwide.
After the strike ends, the company will work intensively to clear the backlog of trains. All customers have been contacted in a timely manner and informed about the situation. This is intended to keep the impacts as minimal as possible.
