18. August 2021DHL Freight is planning a modern freight center to be built on the former airport site in the Fliegerhorst industrial park near Erlensee. The groundbreaking has taken place, and the new facility is expected to be operational by mid-2022. The new building aims to further enhance efficiency and quality within the European DHL Freight network. The listed tower of the former Fliegerhorst airport is part of the concept.
(Bonn/Erlensee) DHL Freight, one of the leading providers of road transport in Europe, is planning a new transshipment facility in the Frankfurt am Main area to further increase efficiency and service quality in its European network. The modern freight center will be built on the former airport site in the Fliegerhorst industrial park near Erlensee. The concept includes three buildings: a cross-dock terminal, a warehouse for specialty chemicals and general production materials, as well as office spaces, most of which will be located in the extensively renovated, listed tower. The new construction project, covering approximately 82,840 m², will be built according to the latest construction and environmental standards, in line with the Sustainability Roadmap of Deutsche Post DHL Group, which calls for sustainable construction practices for new buildings.
Roofs Partially Greened and Partially with Photovoltaics
The roofs of the warehouse and the gatehouse will be greened. Additionally, the roof area of the cross-dock terminal offers potential for the installation of a photovoltaic system with up to 1 MWp (megawatt peak). The ceremonial start of construction was attended by Thorsten Stolz, District Administrator of Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Stefan Erb, Mayor of Erlensee, Builder Ferdinand Fäth, Managing Director of Fäth Immobilien, Dr. Thomas Vogel, CEO of DHL Freight DACH, Götz Hanningsmann, Site Manager of the Erlensee branch and Area Central Manager of DHL Freight, and Gero Schiffelmann, Member of the Management Board of DHL Freight Germany.

The new location in Erlensee in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, realized by Fäth Immobilien, is conveniently located at the highway junctions BAB 66 and 45, and it is only about 25 km to Frankfurt am Main. Approximately 260 employees from the DHL Freight Maintal branch and DHL Freight Euronet will move to Erlensee, and the number of employees is expected to grow to around 300 in the short to medium term. This allows DHL Freight to further expand its capacities in its European groupage network and meet the extremely high demand for transport solutions in road freight transport.
Demand for Logistics Services is Rising
“The demand for road transport and tailored logistics services is steadily increasing. As a leading logistics expert, we are often one of the first points of contact when efficient solutions for complex challenges are required. To continue to meet our customers’ expectations for excellence in the future, we are continuously expanding our network. The capacities at the previous location in Maintal are no longer sufficient for this,” says Thomas Vogel, CEO of DHL Freight DACH. “We are therefore pleased that with the new building, we can not only expand the storage and transshipment areas but also operate a modern and sustainable logistics center.”
Also a Warehouse for Specialty Chemicals
In addition to a 12,000 m² cross-dock terminal, the site will also feature 3,800 m² of office space and a 10,500 m² warehouse for specialty chemicals and general production materials. The office spaces will include the former, listed tower of the airport in the Fliegerhorst II industrial park, which will be extensively modernized and integrated into the freight center. The warehouse for specialty chemicals will comply with the existing regulations of the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) and the Ordinance on Facilities Requiring Approval (4. BImSchV) and will meet the highest safety standards.
The groundbreaking for the project took place in mid-August 2021, and the completion of the logistics center is planned for mid-2022. The project is being realized by Fäth Immobilien, with project management by Bockermann Fritze plan4building GmbH.
