28. August 2021The company Feldschlösschen is further expanding its environmentally friendly beverage delivery. The largest brewery and beverage retailer in Switzerland presented its 20 new 26-ton electric trucks today in Rheinfelden. With these vehicles, Feldschlösschen is taking another milestone on the path to CO2-neutral logistics.
(Rheinfelden/Switzerland) A recent survey of the Swiss gastronomy sector shows that ecological aspects are gaining importance in this industry as well. Sustainable services, such as CO2-neutral delivery, which Feldschlösschen has been offering since 2012, have great potential.
Ecological aspects are an important or very important selling point in attracting guests; 78% of restaurateurs in German-speaking and Western Switzerland share this view, according to a survey from August 2021 [1]. 87% of respondents believe that the topic of sustainability should receive more weight in their operations in the future.
Great Potential for Sustainable Services in Gastronomy
This potential has been recognized early by Feldschlösschen, which supplies around 25,000 customers from gastronomy and retail with beer and beverages. Since 2012, Feldschlösschen has been offering its approximately 15,000 directly supplied gastronomy customers free CO2-neutral delivery. About 17% of the customers surveyed by the company in early August are already benefiting from this service, and 34% intend to use it in the near future.
Clear Demand for Beverage Suppliers
For 88% of the surveyed restaurateurs, it is important or rather important that their beverage supplier has its own sustainable logistics. Every second business would prefer an ecological beverage delivery if costs remain the same. When given a free choice, 21% prefer delivery by train and electric truck, and 31% prefer delivery by electric truck (or another alternative drive). Only 32% stated that the type of delivery does not matter to them or they have no preference.
Another Milestone on the Path to CO2-Neutral Logistics by 2030
The company Feldschlösschen is further expanding sustainable delivery to gastronomy and is getting closer to its goal of CO2-neutral logistics: Today, the brewery and beverage retailer in Rheinfelden has put 20 new 26-ton electric trucks into operation, thus having the largest e-truck fleet in Switzerland. The trucks are the world’s first series-produced electric trucks from Renault Trucks. “We want to deliver our beers and beverages to our customers as environmentally friendly as possible,” emphasizes Thomas Stalder, Head of Logistics at Feldschlösschen. “Within our two-tier distribution network, these emission-free, quiet, and energy-efficient e-trucks play a central role,” Stalder said today in Rheinfelden. The vehicles, with a net payload of 13,800 kg and a range of up to 200 km, will be used at 12 logistics locations for the fine distribution of beverages. Transport from production to logistics locations and to the distribution centers of major customers is done 60% by rail. Feldschlösschen continuously optimizes its own transport network.
Refueling with Self-Produced Solar Power
The electric trucks from Feldschlösschen are refueled with renewable energy. For this purpose, the brewery has, among other things, five photovoltaic systems at the locations of Rheinfelden, Satigny, and Givisiez. This improves the positive CO2 balance of beverage deliveries.
Pioneer for Goods Transport by Electric Truck in Switzerland
Since 2008, Feldschlösschen has been using smaller electric trucks for beverage transport and is thus one of the pioneers in Switzerland. In 2013, the first 18-ton e-truck was deployed in the country. In the medium term, Feldschlösschen aims to convert its entire truck fleet to electric vehicles. “The electric trucks are well received by customers and employees alike,” says Thomas Amstutz, CEO, at today’s press event. “As a market leader, we take ecological responsibility and consistently implement our sustainability strategy. In the last five years alone, we have saved 23% CO2 across the entire company.”
