30. August 2021Empty containers remain a scarce commodity in container shipping. For this reason, Hapag-Lloyd has ordered an additional 75,000 TEU standard containers. The containers will be manufactured in China and are expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2021. Last year and in 2021, Hapag-Lloyd has thus ordered a total of 625,000 TEU.
The shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is responding to the ongoing boom in container shipping and the associated turbulence and resulting delays by procuring an additional 75,000 TEU standard containers.
“Normally, our containers are in transit for 50 days before we can reload them. Due to the massive congestion at ports and terminals worldwide, we currently need up to 60 days or more. This means that we are currently missing 20 percent of the corresponding container capacities. With our recent order, we are helping to alleviate the difficult situation for our global customers further,” says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.
Hapag-Lloyd currently has a container fleet of more than 2.8 million TEU, including 250,000 TEU containers for refrigerated cargo.
