1. September 2021The Federal Association of Goods Transport, Logistics and Disposal (BGL) from Frankfurt am Main offers art connoisseurs and truck enthusiasts, in collaboration with the auction house Christie’s in London, the opportunity to acquire a complete set of four signed serigraphs of the legendary trucks by Andy Warhol in an online auction.
(Frankfurt/Main) In June 1986, 35 years ago, the Federal Association of German Long-Distance Freight Transport (BDF), the predecessor organization of the Federal Association of Goods Transport, Logistics and Disposal (BGL), hosted the 20th World Congress of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) in Frankfurt am Main. On this occasion, the BDF commissioned the pop art icon Andy Warhol the year before the congress to create a screen print edition featuring the motif of a truck. In his characteristic vibrant color combinations, Warhol created a set of four screen prints depicting a truck against yellow, blue, red, and black backgrounds.
It was typical of Andy Warhol to creatively alienate everyday objects in his own personal way, yet without stripping them of their uniqueness. Upon closer inspection, one can even recognize the vehicle model used as a template for the “Truck”: a MAN F8 19.361. Thus, these artworks are not only cultural-historical but also technological-historical documents of their time, while still captivating the viewer with timeless fascination.
Auction “Prints & Multiples Online”
The “Truck” series stands in this Warhol tradition and yet represents a unique case among his late works: Other prominent graphics by Warhol in the years leading up to his death in 1987, which received special attention in Germany, were screen prints featuring the motifs “Goethe” (1982), “Cologne Cathedral” (1985), and “Beethoven” (1987), but they no longer depicted everyday objects like Campbell’s soup cans (1962).
Christie’s will offer a complete, signed, and numbered set of four of these serigraphs as part of the online auction “Prints & Multiples Online,” which will take place exclusively online from September 16 to 28, 2021.
