BAV Confirms Support Contribution for Gateway Basel Nord
15. September 2021As already in road transport, GEODIS now also offers its customers the opportunity to rely on alternative fuels in air and sea freight transport worldwide. This is intended to contribute to reducing the CO2 emissions of its shipments.
“The development of biofuels is one of the strategic measures of GEODIS to tackle the challenge of carbon neutrality. These new air and sea transport solutions offer our customers another opportunity to decarbonize their entire supply chain,” said Marie-Christine Lombard, CEO of GEODIS.
Aviation fuel (Sustainable Aviation Fuel, SAF) and marine fuel (Sustainable Marine Fuel, SMF) from non-fossil sources are produced from food and agricultural waste (mainly cooking oil). Their use allows for a significant reduction in CO2 emissions throughout their entire lifecycle from production to consumption, by at least 80% for air transport and 90% for sea transport, as well as a reduction in other pollutants.
Use of Biofuels is the Most Effective Means
“The use of biofuels is currently the most effective means to significantly reduce the environmental impact of transport activities,” says Philippe de Carné, Executive Vice President Business Development, CSR and Innovation.
These alternative fuel sources are classified as “insecticides” or “integrated carbon reduction” as they are used within the value chain of transport vehicles, as opposed to “offsetting” sources, such as solar panels, wind turbines, or tree planting, which are not directly involved in operations.
“These insecticide solutions provide our customers with the opportunity to have a direct impact on the global CO2 emissions associated with their shipments and to significantly reduce them,” added Philippe de Carné. With a “Book & Claim” approach, customers can make the greatest contribution by covering 100% of the CO2 emissions of their shipping activities if they wish.”
Further Step in the Ecological Transition
Providing a sustainable alternative fuel for air and sea transport is another step in GEODIS’s ecological transition. The group is one of the world’s leading logistics providers that can offer its customers the use of biofuels for all modes of transport: by road, air, and sea.
