SCM@baustoffe Optimizes Supply Chains in the Construction Materials Industry
8. October 2021The Federal Association of Goods Transport, Logistics, and Waste Management (BGL) e.V. calls on politics, business, and society to rethink and take immediate action to prevent English conditions in Germany and an impending supply collapse. Because Germany is threatened by a similar disaster in supply as is currently the case in England.
(Frankfurt/Main) Germany is facing a supply collapse in 2-3 years similar to that in England! Already today, there is a shortage of 60,000 – 80,000 professional drivers. Every year, about 30,000 professional drivers retire, while only about 17,000 new entrants are available. This development, which has been evident for some time and which the BGL has been pointing out for a long time, is now becoming increasingly acute. The current supply situation in England shows how quickly the driver shortage can develop into a supply collapse.
BGL spokesperson Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt: “We warn that we are also knowingly heading towards a supply collapse in Western Europe. Therefore, politics, business, and society must finally wake up and decisively confront the driver shortage in a collective societal effort!”
Coordinate Measures Nationally and in Europe
However, as urgent as the need for action is, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem of driver shortages. Rather, different measures must be combined at both the European and national levels. The BGL therefore outlines five central areas with various measures in its action plan for driver shortages that must be implemented promptly:
– Improve appreciation / image
– Improve working conditions
– Address hurdles / reduce bureaucracy decisively
– Promote recruitment of young talent and digitalization
– Facilitate skilled labor immigration
