EDEKA Group Relies on WITRON-OPM for the Eighth Time
Oct 12, 2021 at 8:29 PMThe pfenning logistics group, a family-run contract logistics service provider, is responding to the growing demand for logistics services for sensitive goods. To this end, the logistics provider is establishing two new logistics properties in Bad Hersfeld and Mecklar, both located in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district.
(Heddesheim/Bad Hersfeld/Mecklar) pfenning logistics is developing and constructing both properties according to its own multicube concept and aims for a DGNB Platinum certification (German Sustainable Building Council) for the properties. The new construction projects involve investments of around 120 million euros. Additionally, the family-owned company expects to create 300 additional jobs in the region. The properties will be equipped with temperature zones for fresh goods and other products such as pharmaceuticals. GDP certification and IFS certification are also being pursued.
The establishment of the multi-user capable logistics centers expands the logistics capacities of the pfenning logistics group in central Germany. The investments are part of a comprehensive growth strategy of the company amounting to a mid-three-digit million euro figure. “Northeast Hesse is one of the most important logistics regions in Germany and thus a hub within European logistics. Thanks to the new logistics properties, we can meet the demands of a variety of industries with maximum flexibility,” explains Rana Matthias Nag, Managing Director of the pfenning logistics group, regarding the choice of location.
Multi-temperature facility for subsidiary HFL
At the headquarters of the subsidiary HFL Herbst Frischelogistik in Bad Hersfeld, the multi-temperature facility freshcube osthessen is being built, where a total of 12,000 m² of temperature-controlled modern storage space as well as social and office spaces for the administration of HFL employees will be available on two floors. Construction work will begin in early 2022, after which the storage areas will be put into operation in three temperature zones between 4 to 25 degrees Celsius.
Thomas Fehling, Mayor of Bad Hersfeld, welcomes the establishment at the site: “Our community offers important networking advantages for logistics companies due to its central and conveniently located position. We are pleased that pfenning logistics, along with the well-known HFL Frischelogistik, is utilizing these advantages and will strengthen the economic location.”
Temperature-controlled logistics center in Mecklar
A larger multi-user logistics center, named multicube osthessen, with a storage area of 77,000 m² is being constructed by pfenning logistics in Mecklar, a town in the neighboring municipality of Ludwigsau, on a plot of approximately 150,000 m². At this location, after the completion of construction work, cooling between exactly 14 and 18 degrees Celsius will be enabled. Construction in Mecklar will begin shortly.
Wilfried Hagemann, Mayor of the municipality of Ludwigsau, appreciates these efforts: “The multicube concept has convinced us not only because of its consistent ecological sustainability aspect in construction and throughout the entire lifecycle. We also perceive pfenning logistics as a committed partner that creates added value for the community, the population, and the local economy.”

The sustainable multicube concept
The property construction method developed by the company ensures that construction and operationally relevant sustainability criteria are fully taken into account. “It is part of our social responsibility as a family-owned company that we also strive for a high DGNB certification for the logistics centers planned in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district,” says Nag. “We have decades of experience in the construction and operation of logistics centers, and we also know that good spaces for logistics are rare. Therefore, we are even more pleased that we can provide our services from such excellent locations in the future,” emphasizes Nag.
Both projects are expected to be completed and put into operation in early 2023.
