15. December 2021Products such as the “Billy” shelf or the “Hemnes” bed from the Swedish furniture manufacturer IKEA have been reaching customers in the greater Vienna area since October in emission-free electric vehicles. For the Home Delivery division, Gebrüder Weiss has deployed 15 new fully electric delivery vehicles from the manufacturer Quantron. With the switch to emission-free vehicles, CO2 emissions for end customer deliveries are reduced by about 150 tons annually.
(Lauterach/Vienna) In addition to delivery with electric transporters, Gebrüder Weiss also provides additional services with its own personnel directly at the IKEA warehouse. These include, among other things, picking goods, loading, and dispatching the vehicles. Furniture and large appliances are delivered to end customers with a two-person handling team and can be unpacked and assembled upon request. Gebrüder Weiss delivers approximately 60,000 shipments per year with the new electric vehicles in the greater Vienna area. The vehicles obtain green electricity during loading at the central warehouse, making them immediately ready for use without any time loss.
Emission-free delivery
“With the launch of our new electric fleet in Vienna, we are one step closer to our goal of achieving worldwide CO2-neutral customer delivery by 2025,” says Claes Lindgren, Head of Customer Fulfillment IKEA Austria. Vienna is one of 30 major cities worldwide where IKEA is transitioning to emission-free vehicles for deliveries. According to Claes Lindgren, with Gebrüder Weiss, they have a logistics provider at their side that has already successfully used various alternative drives in everyday logistics.
“Due to the short distances in the Vienna area and the low transport weight, electric vehicles are ideal for our Home Delivery services. Especially in urban areas with their high population and traffic density, electric transporters make an important contribution to emission-free delivery traffic,” says Jürgen Bauer, a member of the management board of Gebrüder Weiss. In the future, deliveries by electric transporters are also planned for IKEA customers in other federal states of Austria.
IKEA partner in Austria and beyond
Gebrüder Weiss has been a logistics partner of IKEA since 2017. Besides Austria, the logistics company serves IKEA’s Home Delivery customers in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia. In these countries, the transition to delivery with electric transporters is also planned in the medium term. In Austria, Gebrüder Weiss has been operating several IKEA pick-up stations in addition to Home Delivery services for almost a year. With 220,000 shipments annually, Gebrüder Weiss is the largest logistics partner of the Swedish furniture company in Austria.
