Test train with automatic couplings starts journey through Europe
19. January 2022In 2021, the Austrian Post not only set a new record for transported packages domestically. Overall, the Post moved nearly half a billion packages worldwide in the past year – representing a volume increase of nine percent. However, the majority of shipments were not transported in the home market of Austria, but through its parcel subsidiary Aras Kargo in Turkey: namely 217 million packages. By comparison, 184 million packages were transported in Austria in the previous year – an increase of eleven percent.
(Wien) The Austrian Post transports packages and pallets in a total of nine countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Austria, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Turkey. “Across all subsidiaries, the package volumes in 2021 amounted to 452 million pieces. The majority of these were in Austria and Turkey. However, our subsidiaries in Central and Eastern Europe also recorded enormous growth rates with a volume increase of 16 percent. Last year, we transported nearly 52 million packages there,” said DI Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics at Austrian Post AG, who emphasizes that the growth in foreign markets, similar to Austria, is primarily due to the increasing trend towards e-commerce.
The sales volumes of the individual subsidiaries:

Peter Umundum continued: “We are very pleased with this new package record; we have also invested heavily in our international network to be fit for corresponding volume increases in the future. In addition, we focus strongly on customer orientation and convenient delivery solutions to always be the first choice for both senders and recipients.”
Investments in infrastructure
For example, last year, seven logistics centers across Turkey were automated at Aras Kargo, which increased sorting capacity by 30 percent. The existing Out of Home network was more than doubled to around 2,400 locations. All subsidiaries expanded their reception options for shipments and strengthened customer orientation. In total, 1,845 new locations for package reception were put into operation in Southeast Europe in 2021.
2022 is also focused on targeted investments. For instance, Express One in Hungary is commissioning new sorting facilities, in Slovakia, the conveyor technology in logistics centers is being expanded, and parcel machines will also be further expanded throughout CEE. At Aras Kargo, sorting capacity in logistics centers will be increased by another 30 percent, and the delivery fleet will be expanded and renewed.
