A.P. Moller – Maersk Acquires Pilot Freight Services in the USA
9. February 2022Medical products require special handling: That is why UPS Healthcare will open its first logistics branch specifically focused on healthcare products in Giessen at the beginning of 2023. This facility is part of the proactive strategy through which UPS Healthcare will expand its global presence.
(PresseBox; Neuss) The growing and innovative market for medical products demands advanced, temperature-controlled logistics – requirements that the new location can optimally meet. “The new branch will serve some of the fastest-growing healthcare markets in the world,” explains Wes Wheeler, President of UPS Healthcare. “The opening of our first location in Germany is an investment in our customers. Their latest pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical products require seamless and high-quality service for storage and handling.”
In 2021, UPS Healthcare already invested globally in more than 36,000 square meters of cold chain storage and freezing capacity. Some of these facilities are located in newly opened and modernized healthcare facilities in Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Italy. These locations complement the one million square meters of healthcare-specific storage capacities that already exist in 134 strategically located GDP/GMP-certified facilities across 30 countries.
Approximately 25,000 m2 of certified space
The GMP and GDP-certified area of 24,680 square meters at the Giessen branch includes more than 30,000 pallet spaces, where a wide range of healthcare products can be stored at temperatures of 2°C to 8°C, 15°C to 25°C, and down to -20°C.
Strategically located in the heart of Central Europe, the new branch provides access to the rapidly growing Western and Eastern European healthcare markets and supports manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biologics, who increasingly require time-sensitive and temperature-sensitive logistics for their products. The global market for biologic therapeutics is expected to rise from $285.5 billion in 2020 to $421.8 billion by 2025.
Proximity to logistics hubs
The proximity of the new healthcare logistics branch in Giessen to the European UPS air freight hub at Cologne Bonn Airport and the European UPS Healthcare hub in Roermond also offers customers shorter national and global transit times, potentially larger production windows, and enables reaching 80 percent of Europe by the next day. Important ports such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Amsterdam can also be quickly accessed from Giessen. Additionally, the facility will support hospital and pharmacy distribution throughout Germany.
Shipments can be tracked at any time
The new location is part of UPS Healthcare’s ongoing investments in Germany. Recently, the company also introduced UPS Premier in the country: This service, designed primarily for critical healthcare goods, can locate deliveries within a three-meter radius of their location – regardless of where they are in UPS’s global network. These shipments can thus be accurately tracked at any time and prioritized if necessary.
