Transporeon Expands Real Time Yard Management
22. February 2022Lufthansa Cargo and the owner-managed logistics company Röhlig Logistics are joining forces for climate protection and are now offering customers a sustainable transport option on selected routes. Röhlig Logistics is investing in certified climate protection projects to effectively compensate for CO2 emissions generated during air freight transport.
(Frankfurt/Bremen) Röhlig Logistics is initially focusing on four selected freight routes for the decarbonization of air freight. This is expected to compensate for approximately 1,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
Philip W. Herwig, Managing Partner at Röhlig Logistics, explains: “Röhlig is committed to promoting sustainability in all its business activities and decision-making processes. Therefore, we are particularly pleased to be a partner of Lufthansa Cargo and to take a measurable step in our sustainability efforts. From now on, we offer our customers CO2-neutral freight transport on selected routes. 100 percent of the CO2 emissions will be compensated through the promotion of projects by the international non-profit climate protection organization myclimate.”
“We are pleased to have Röhlig Logistics as another partner by our side, actively working to make air freight transport more sustainable. Our goal at Lufthansa Cargo is to become the most environmentally friendly air freight airline. Therefore, we are investing in a modern fleet, innovations such as AeroShark, which reduces air resistance, and lighter loading aids of the latest generation. These investments help significantly reduce our CO2 emissions. We offer our customers sustainable transport solutions that reduce the remaining CO2 footprint. This includes not only Sustainable Aviation Fuel but also the compensation of CO2 emissions through investments in high-quality climate protection projects,” explains Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo.
On the following routes, all CO2 emissions of the freight items transported on behalf of Röhlig Logistics will be compensated 100 percent:
- from Frankfurt am Main (FRA) to Atlanta (ATL)
- from Frankfurt am Main (FRA) to Mexico City (MEX)
- from Frankfurt am Main (FRA) to Shanghai (PVG)
- from Hong Kong (HKG) to Frankfurt am Main (FRA)
Compensation with myclimate Projects
Already emitted CO2 emissions can be offset through high-quality compensation projects. This works because it does not matter for the climate where greenhouse gases are emitted and where they are saved. For example, in the projects, fossil energy sources are replaced by renewable energy or energy-efficient technologies, thereby reducing CO2 emissions, such as using solar cookers instead of firewood. Another option is the protection of endangered forests, whose trees absorb, transform, and store CO2 from the atmosphere over their lifetime. The amount of emissions saved from the projects is calculated and can be passed on to companies as emission reduction credits – so-called certificates – in the required quantity.
Projects Bring Local Benefits
Based on the certified CO2 savings or reductions, there is the possibility to offset CO2 emissions that arise, for example, in the context of freight transport. Another advantage: The compensation mechanism through high-quality projects not only includes climate protection measures that demonstrably save CO2, but the projects also always bring local benefits for the population and the environment. Jobs are created, infrastructures are improved, health risks are reduced, biodiversity is protected, or educational opportunities are enhanced.
Processing via Compensaid Platform
Röhlig Logistics relies on a curated selection of ten climate protection projects from the non-profit organization myclimate for the compensation projects, which applies only the strictest independent quality standards such as Gold Standard and Plan Vivo in the selection and design of climate protection projects. The compensation is processed through Compensaid, the digital platform for CO2-neutral flying of the Lufthansa Group.
