23. February 2022Scandlines strengthens the positive development of the freight business, which is gaining increasing importance. The shipping company has just launched its freight website in a new, user-friendly design to provide an improved service to the steadily growing number of freight customers.
(Hamburg) The new year has started well for Scandlines’ freight business, with the positive trend from the last quarter of the previous year continuing into January. Freight traffic increased by 12 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. The number of transported freight units is now higher than in 2020 and 2019; it even exceeds the year 2018, which was previously considered a record year, by a few percentage points.
With the new freight page, it is now even easier for freight customers to book crossings and access relevant information about Scandlines routes, the company’s goal of emission-free shipping, and much more. This information was specifically requested by customers on the previous website.
“We can now offer our freight customers a modern and clearly structured website with direct access to Cargo Online booking; alongside EDI and the Scandlines Freight app, this is one of the electronic alternatives to manual bookings via email or phone through our freight booking department,” says Gerald Lefold, Managing Director for Freight Sales at Scandlines.
Emission-Free from Puttgarden to Rødby
In light of the ongoing growth in the freight sector, Scandlines ordered an emission-free freight ferry for the Puttgarden-Rødby route in November 2021. This ferry is expected to be in operation by 2024. “We expect the positive development in this business area to continue. Our freight customers increasingly value that the transport service is carried out as sustainably as possible. We would like to meet this demand,” Gerald Lefold further explains.
The new ferry will have a capacity of 66 freight units; thus, the current capacity on the Puttgarden-Rødby route will be increased by 23 percent. With a crossing time of one hour, the ferry is emission-free. It can also be used like the current passenger ships between Germany and Denmark as a hybrid ferry. In hybrid operation, the crossing time is 45 minutes. With the commissioning of an emission-free ferry, Scandlines is taking another significant step on its green journey.
