Switzerland Inspects 140,000 Heavy Vehicles in 2021
29. March 2022Volvo Trucks in North America has received an order for 110 Volvo VNR Electric trucks from the global logistics company Maersk. The deal complements a previous order of 16 vehicles of the same model and marks the largest commercial single order for Volvo Trucks’ electric trucks to date.
(Ismaning/Copenhagen) The order was placed by the Performance Team, which is part of the Maersk Group, meaning that a total of 126 such electric trucks will be in operation. The first electric trucks are set to be put into service in the second quarter of 2022, with all 126 vehicles expected to be deployed by the first quarter of 2023.
“Volvo Trucks is pleased to continue working with Maersk on its sustainability goals for the fleet and to play a key role in the company’s ongoing investments in electric mobility solutions,” says Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America. The Class 8 electric trucks will be used in California for a variety of transport tasks, serving port and warehouse distribution routes.

The Volvo VNR Electric has a range of up to 440 km and an energy storage capacity of up to 565 kWh. The truck can be charged to 80% in 90 minutes with the six-battery pack and to 60% with the four-battery version. The Volvo VNR Electric is produced at the Volvo Trucks plant in New River Valley, Virginia, the exclusive manufacturer of all Volvo Trucks in North America.
50% Electric Sales by 2030
Globally, Volvo Trucks has set the ambitious goal that by 2030, around 50% of all vehicles sold will be electric. “We are determined to lead the electric transformation of the transport industry. The numbers are still low, but we see rapidly growing interest in Europe, North America, and other parts of the world. In 2021, we received orders, including letters of intent, for more than 1,100 electric trucks in over 20 countries. It is clearly becoming an important competitive advantage to be able to offer electric, emission-free transport,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
Leading in 2021 for Electric Trucks
Volvo Trucks was the market leader in heavy electric trucks in Europe in 2021 with a market share of 42% and also holds a leading position in North America. With a total of six electric truck models in production this year, Volvo Trucks has the most comprehensive electric range in the global truck industry. It covers all facets from urban distribution and waste management to construction transport and regional transport.
