6. April 2022Nexxiot, a provider of TradeTech solutions and a pioneer in the digitization of logistics processes, today introduces its latest sensor. The Cargo Monitor is a groundbreaking IoT sensor that combines high connectivity and data quality with a compact, user-friendly design, ensuring maximum transparency along the supply chain.
(Zurich) The Cargo Monitor from Nexxiot provides real-time information worldwide about the location and condition of transported goods, aiming to make global freight transport more transparent and efficient. As an innovative new hardware solution, it complements Nexxiot’s TradeTech product range.
Approximately 90 percent of goods worldwide are currently transported by container ships. This also applies to many perishable or sensitive items. However, once these are packed in containers and loaded onto a transport vehicle, it becomes difficult to reliably check their condition. Temperature fluctuations, strong vibrations, or moisture can negatively affect the quality of the cargo.
“Today, there are about 40 million standard containers in intermodal transport worldwide, of which very few can be monitored digitally,” says Matilda Bouchet, Managing Director, Head of Cargo at Nexxiot. “Until now, shippers and other transport stakeholders had little to no overview of the condition of their goods during transport. The new Cargo Monitor from Nexxiot aims to change that by providing continuous transparency. By continuously providing data through our robust, cost-effective, and easy-to-implement IoT sensor, we want to initiate a change in the logistics industry.”
Monitoring High-Quality and Sensitive Products
The Nexxiot Cargo Monitor has been developed to monitor high-quality and sensitive products during transport. It is simply attached to the cargo in the container before it is shipped and can be connected to the Wireless Maritime Services (WMS), which provides ships at sea with mobile and internet connectivity. This makes the Cargo Monitor particularly suitable for monitoring perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles, sensitive industrial products, or electronics during long sea transport.
In addition, Nexxiot relies on a self-developed software that is easy to use and informs the user in real-time about heavy vibrations, excessive humidity and condensation, or temperature fluctuations in the container. Furthermore, the origin of the goods and potential issues, such as unplanned interruptions, can be traced. This real-time data is processed in an intelligent cloud into data-driven insights that users of the Cargo Monitor can benefit from. The functions of the Cargo Monitor can also be adapted to different types of goods and customer needs.
Groundbreaking Technology in Action
“In recent years, global supply chains have been put to the test,” Bouchet continues. “The impacts of resource scarcity, geopolitical tensions, border closures, and traffic jams highlight how much humanity relies on international freight transport to maintain its high standard of living. Manufacturers, retailers, and consumers are therefore increasingly expecting more information about the location and quality of their cargo. The new Nexxiot Cargo Monitor is thus a quantum leap for transparency and intelligence in supply chains.”
Integrated Energy Management
The Cargo Monitor combines technological innovations that meet the demand for more transparency. These include a unique powerful transceiver with innovative antenna design and low power consumption. This device sends important data from anywhere in the world and provides cargo owners and transport stakeholders with insight into the exact status of their cargo.
The hardware device also features integrated energy management and a rechargeable battery, various sensor functions, powerful connectivity, over-the-air firmware updates, and a robust design that meets industrial standards. A battery life of 90 days ensures continuous data transmission even during long international supply chains.
Complete Transparency and High-Quality Data
- Complete transparency based on high-quality data originating from the cargo itself. Cargo owners receive information about location, condition, clearance status, and safety-related events.
- Shippers can prove the location, condition, and quality of the cargo to their recipients at any time, thereby demonstrating process responsibility and transparency.
- Freight forwarders can improve the safety of their transports and reduce issues due to misdeclared cargo.
- The data can be used to accelerate important processes such as cargo declaration, customs checks, and congestion planning, thereby reducing transport time.
