22. April 2022In 2021, Hapag-Lloyd declared its holistic sustainability strategy as the fourth pillar of its “Strategy 2023”. With the Sustainability Report 2021, the shipping company presents its consistently pursued path towards sustainable shipping and outlines the progress and results of its ecological, social, and qualitative measures.
Hapag-Lloyd takes a holistic approach to sustainability. The strategic goals for the next ten years focus on three key themes: “Clean Shipping and Future-Proof Propulsion”, “Diversity and Society”, and “Compliance and Responsibility”. Hapag-Lloyd has set decarbonization as one of its most important goals for its sustainable transformation and intends to operate all ships climate-neutrally by 2045 through the use of alternative fuels. On the way to climate neutrality, the shipping company has set an interim target for 2030 to reduce the carbon intensity of the entire fleet by 30 percent compared to 2019 (measured by the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI)).
Clear Mission: Shipping for a Cleaner Future
These goals can only be achieved with future-proof propulsion systems, which is why Hapag-Lloyd has invested in twelve new container ships. Each ship, with a capacity of more than 23,500 TEU and a dual-fuel propulsion system, will be able to operate with conventional fuel, fossil methane gas (LNG), and future alternative fuels. Furthermore, Hapag-Lloyd conducted tests with selected biofuels for the operation of its ship classes A19 and A15 in 2021 and, thanks to successful certification, will now be able to operate 16 ships with these fuels. “Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy. As a global shipping company, the world’s oceans are literally our playground, and we want to make a significant contribution to our industry’s path towards climate-neutral shipping,” says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. “We are very determined to decarbonize our fleet.”
Committed to Social Responsibility
The Sustainability Report 2021 also highlights Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to society and at the community level. To promote global social activities, the shipping company has developed the program “Hapag-Lloyd Cares”, which supports regional and local educational projects, humanitarian aid, and measures to protect the oceans. In addition, Hapag-Lloyd collaborates globally with humanitarian and ecological organizations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF or the world-renowned skipper Boris Herrmann and his team Malizia.
