May 3, 2022 at 7:52 PMA new office space for freight forwarders and customs agencies is being created by Azollo Immobilien GmbH in the abandoned administrative and commercial buildings at the Lofo industrial park in Weil am Rhein, the former site of the company Lonza. The area is located right next to the joint customs facility Basel/Weil am Rhein-Autobahn (GZA). The existing buildings are set to be demolished, making the timing optimal.
(Basel/Weil am Rhein) The Weiler industrial park Lofo is coming to life. In addition to areas for manufacturing businesses, there is a roughly 5000 sqm area with existing buildings, formerly the administrative building, laboratories, and workshops of the company Lonza or LOFO, Weil am Rhein, which are intended for the service sector.
These areas with buildings have been acquired by Azollo Immobilien GmbH and are now being gradually converted into office spaces or renovated. The first tenants are expected to move in as early as autumn 2022, with discussions currently ongoing with many other interested parties.
After it became known that the existing office towers at the neighboring joint customs facility can no longer be renovated and will fall victim to demolition, there is a high demand for office space for customs service providers, freight forwarders, and logistics companies in close proximity to the border crossing.
New Offices for Customs, but Not for Service Providers
While new buildings for the Swiss and German customs will be constructed on the existing site of the joint customs facility, there will be none for the service providers.
Thus, a customs competence center is now being developed in the neighboring LOFO industrial park, which will particularly accommodate customs service providers in the future. Currently, over 50 companies ensure the smooth processing of up to 2,500 trucks daily around the joint customs facility Basel-Weil am Rhein. Despite digitalization and home office, the presence of customs experts at the EU’s external borders is indispensable.

Social and Rest Areas for Drivers
Additionally, social and rest areas for drivers, as well as catering options and information centers (toll) etc., are to be established.
“In ensuring supply chains and the complex handling of customs, export, and import transactions, the employees in the future customs park Basel-Weil am Rhein will be indispensable and important contacts for customs and fiscal authorities,” said Dietmar Kutta, spokesperson for Azollo Immobilien GmbH.
