Hamburg-based Parcel Logistics Provider Hermes Celebrates 50 Years of Existence
Jun 1, 2022 at 5:00 PMDeutsche Post DHL has officially launched the new Mega Parcel Center in Ludwigsfelde today, further enhancing the capabilities of DHL Paket’s nationwide network in Germany. The company has invested a low three-digit million amount in the modern site in Ludwigsfelde to better and faster handle the expected high parcel volumes due to the growing e-commerce. It is the first Mega Parcel Center of this type in East Germany.
(Bonn) Currently, around 550 employees are working at the Ludwigsfelde site. By the time full capacity is reached – expected by the end of 2024 – around 600 social security-contributing and collectively bargained jobs are to be created at the new site. Newly hired employees will be compensated based on the applicable collective agreement of Deutsche Post AG. This also applies to temporary workers.
“With the establishment of the Ludwigsfelde Parcel Center, we are continuing to invest in the capacity and quality of our services in Germany and preparing for further growth. With a high sorting capacity and the use of innovative technology, the new parcel center in Ludwigsfelde makes an important contribution to our German parcel network,” says Tobias Meyer.
Relief for the Berlin Region
With Ludwigsfelde, the two existing parcel centers for the Berlin area in Rüdersdorf and Börnicke can be relieved, and customers in Berlin and Brandenburg can be supplied with parcels even more reliably and quickly.
“We are pleased to create social security-contributing, collectively bargained jobs in a logistically advantageous location in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. This investment is our clear commitment to the Berlin-Brandenburg region and its people,” Meyer continues.
A New Era of Parcel Delivery
Dietmar Woidke, Minister-President of Brandenburg: “Today we are witnessing a new era of parcel delivery and are standing in one of the most modern machine rooms of the parcel age: the first groundbreaking took place in 2019. Three years later, an immense investment has resulted in a 37,000 square meter industrial building. Up to 50,000 shipments are sorted here per hour and sent on their way to customers. In conjunction with the excellent connectivity of the Ludwigsfelde site, even faster and more reliable supply is now guaranteed. The number of collectively bargained, social security-contributing jobs is expected to rise from the current 550 to up to 600 after commissioning. This aligns with our goal of ‘Good Work’. This is the right way, as good working conditions and fair pay are fundamental to attracting and retaining the urgently needed skilled workers.”
Praise for Good Cooperation
Andreas Igel, Mayor of Ludwigsfelde, emphasizes: “The investment of the DHL Group in one of the largest parcel centers in Europe with 600 collectively bargained jobs not only strengthens the economic location of Ludwigsfelde but also radiates throughout the entire region. I have perceived the cooperation between the city of Ludwigsfelde and Deutsche Post as highly professional and trustworthy from the very beginning, and I am proud that the home of the most modern parcel center in East Germany is now Ludwigsfelde.”
Andreas Igel adds: “The individually developed and innovative digital high-tech used within the parcel center is true Industry 4.0. This was exactly the vision we pursued with the Eichspitze at the beginning of the development. I wish DHL and all employees at the new site much success and look forward to further cooperation.”
Sustainable Aspects
DHL acquired the property in the Industrial Park 4.0 Eichspitze Ludwigsfelde, covering an area of around 165,000 square meters and with good access to the road and rail network, at the end of 2017. The building of the parcel center is approximately 37,000 square meters in size. To operate it as energy-efficient as possible, a dedicated combined heat and power plant provides the electricity and heat supply for the parcel center. For this purpose, the company purchases biogas, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions at this site. Energy-saving LED lamps controlled by motion sensors are used for lighting. The site is one of the first where internal yard traffic is realized with electrically powered switching vehicles. This contributes additionally to noise and CO2 emission reduction.
Including the new site in Ludwigsfelde, Deutsche Post DHL now operates a network of 37 parcel centers in Germany.
