1. June 2022Volvo Trucks is introducing a new safety system that detects other road users entering the blind spot on both sides of the truck. In hectic traffic situations, it is difficult even for the most experienced drivers to perceive everything around the truck. To avoid stressful situations for drivers, Volvo Trucks offers a new safety system. Using dual radar on each side of the truck, the system detects when road users, such as cyclists, enter the danger zone.
“An accident can happen in a split second. Our extensive accident research is based on decades of studying real-life situations, and this new safety system helps drivers avoid potential collisions,” says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks.
If someone is in the blind spot area, the Side Collision Avoidance Support system informs drivers with a red light on the corresponding side mirror. When drivers indicate a lane change with their turn signal, the red light starts to flash, and a warning signal sounds from the side of the potential collision. Drivers are alerted and can slow down the truck to allow, for example, cyclists to overtake.
“Our long-term vision at Volvo Trucks is zero accidents, and safety is at the core of our actions. This new system is another example of our efforts to achieve these goals,” concludes Anna Wrige.
The new system will be available worldwide from September this year for the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX models with diesel, gas, and electric drive. The Volvo FL and Volvo FE models will receive the new safety system in 2023.
