15. June 2022The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) published a comprehensive data analysis on the use of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) on June 15, 2022. The FTA Monitor – newly available for Switzerland and EFTA – shows the extent to which companies save customs duties thanks to FTAs: In 2020, savings on imports into Switzerland amounted to around 2.3 billion francs.
(Bern) Switzerland has a very well-developed network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Thanks to these FTAs, economic actors in Switzerland and in the FTA partner countries benefit from improved market access, as better customs conditions apply through FTAs. Consequently, FTAs enable Swiss companies to enhance their competitiveness in both foreign and domestic markets.
Monitor Shows Benefits of Free Trade Agreements
SECO analyzes the use of FTAs and the customs savings that companies achieve thanks to the FTAs. Since 2020, SECO has published the FTA Monitor annually, which presents all relevant figures on the use of individual FTAs at a glance. Thus, the FTA Monitor allows economic actors, political decision-makers, and the general public to gain a clearer insight into the extent to which FTAs are utilized. The FTA Monitor shows that customs savings of 2.3 billion francs were realized on imports into Switzerland in 2020 thanks to FTAs. The FTA Monitor for Switzerland is available on the SECO website.
Monitor Also Created for EFTA
The FTA Monitor is now also created for EFTA. Most of Switzerland’s FTAs were concluded within the framework of EFTA. Based on Switzerland’s experiences, EFTA has now also conducted a comprehensive analysis of the use of EFTA’s FTAs. This new FTA Monitor provides an overview of the use of FTAs between EFTA states and their partner countries for the period 2018-2020. The FTA Monitor for EFTA is available on the EFTA website.
