June 2022By 2030, approximately 7 million square meters of storage space for lithium-ion batteries will be needed, according to the forecast by Kuno Neumeier, CEO of Logivest and spokesperson for the logistics real estate working group of the Federal Association of Logistics (BVL e.V.). However, nationwide standards and public regulations for the storage of lithium-ion batteries are still lacking.
(Munich) In a white paper, Logivest has compiled information on the current planning and developments in the production, storage, and recycling of hazardous materials. Additionally, the logistics real estate experts provide tips on what to consider when choosing a location and storage.
Continuous Increase in the Number of Electric Cars
Around 15 million electric cars are expected to be on Germany’s roads by 2030 – this is the goal of the federal government. The transition to electromobility remains the dominant topic in the automotive industry. At the heart of electromobility are lithium-ion batteries, but not only production areas are needed for these; additional central and regional warehouses as well as space for spare parts logistics are also required.
“I anticipate a need for storage space for lithium-ion batteries of around 7 million square meters by 2030,” says Kuno Neumeier. “Therefore, it can be assumed that around 1,000 additional building permits will be submitted for this purpose. Unfortunately, there are still no uniform standards or legal regulations for the storage of lithium-ion batteries – this needs to change,” demands the logistics real estate expert.
Uniform Standards Needed
Currently, there exists a potpourri of different approval procedures and many individual solutions in Germany. It is important that clear regulations are in place to minimize risks to humans and the environment as much as possible. Here, the legislator is called upon to define uniform standards that apply nationwide.
