25 Years of Successful ZAPPing in the Port of Hamburg with DAKOSY
30. June 2022Contargo GmbH & Co. KG has been awarded an additional area at the Port of Voerde-Emmelsum by DeltaPort GmbH & Co. KG as part of the Europe-wide tendering process. The area, which is approximately 11,000 m2 and adjacent to Contargo’s existing terminal, will see the container terminal expanded and the quay extended by 130 meters in the coming years.
(Wesel) Contargo aims to further expand its service offerings in the Lower Rhine and northern Ruhr area and keep pace with the development of the logistics location initiated by DeltaPort, which includes further large settlements and the resulting handling volumes at the Port of Voerde-Emmelsum and the Rhein-Lippe Port Wesel.
The contractual establishment of renowned logistics companies on approximately 300,000 m2 will expand the logistics location at the Port of Voerde-Emmelsum and the Rhein-Lippe Port Wesel in the coming years, creating an additional approximately 500 jobs in the region. “The marketing of the available areas is progressing and will soon be completed,” emphasizes Andreas Stolte, Managing Director of DeltaPort GmbH & Co. KG. “Integrated logistics concepts for customers represent one of the main advantages of the port.” The trimodality of the port and the short delivery routes to the logistics companies significantly contribute to environmental protection. “We therefore welcome the acquisition of the additional area and the associated expansion of the container terminal by Contargo. The development in the area of emerging warehouse and distribution centers requires a parallel development of the port handling facilities,” Stolte further states.
Expansion of Service Offerings
The container terminal at the Port of Voerde-Emmelsum has been successfully operated by Contargo since 2017. “Participating in the tender and expanding the terminal was a logical step, especially in light of the development of the port as a location for numerous new import and export-oriented storage services initiated by DeltaPort,” says Jürgen Albersmann, Managing Director of Contargo GmbH & Co. KG. “We will invest around 15 million euros in the expansion and increase of the terminal’s handling capacity. Part of this measure includes a second high-performance crane.”
The terminal operating company Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe GmbH has been organizing comprehensive container logistics by inland waterway and rail for customers in the Lower Rhine and northern Ruhr area since 2017. “With the expansion, we can significantly broaden our service offerings for our customers. In the future, two inland vessels and a complete train can be processed simultaneously at the terminal. Ideal conditions for so-called hub traffic,” says Sascha Noreika, Managing Director of Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe GmbH.
Additional 800 Container Parking Spaces
The expansion will not only increase hub traffic but also create 800 additional parking spaces for container storage in the near future. Additionally, a fleet of electric trucks will be introduced. “Sustainability is an important topic today,” says Sascha Noreika. “As Contargo, we have been actively engaged in this for many years, for example, through our trimodal offering and the possibility of delivering containers with electric instead of diesel trucks. This enables our customers to have CO2-neutral transport.”
About DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen
The DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen is a consortium founded in early 2018, comprising the DeltaPort ports of Wesel/Voerde (Rhein-Lippe Port Wesel, City Port Wesel, Port of Voerde-Emmelsum), the Port of Emmerich, and the NIAG Port in Rheinberg-Orsoy. The goal of the DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen is to strengthen the inland ports in the Lower Rhine region. Together, the partners represent the entire portfolio: from bulk goods to general and heavy cargo to liquid goods and containerized cargo.
The DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen are characterized by their trimodal infrastructure, their geographically advantageous location near the seaports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp, but on the edge of the congestion cluster of the Ruhr area/Cologne metropolitan area, available open spaces, significant development potential, a flexible administrative apparatus, and close partnerships with their customers. With flagship projects such as EcoPort 813 and the funding program “Innovative Port Technologies,” they set standards in terms of sustainability and digitalization.
