4. August 2022The Rhenus Group, one of the leading logistics service providers operating worldwide, announces further steps in the pursuit of climate neutrality in “Less than Container Load” transport (LCL transport): A new pilot project ensures that the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions meets international standards.
(Holzwickede/Hilden) Consolidated sea freight shipments from partial loads that Rhenus exports from the LCL gateway in Hilden, North Rhine-Westphalia, can obtain the ClimatePartner label as proof of offsetting CO2 emissions for the first quarter of 2022. Rhenus collaborates with the independent consulting firm ClimatePartner to validate the calculation methodology for CO2 offsetting and to compensate for the amount of carbon dioxide emitted through verified and certified climate protection projects.
The ClimatePartner label, which confirms the climate neutrality of products offered under the Rhenus name, is available to companies that commission Rhenus for LCL transports from the gateway in Hilden starting this year. So far, emissions from the first quarter of 2022 have been calculated and offset, with compensation for the remainder of the year to follow. As part of the pilot project, Rhenus is investing in a wind energy project, thereby promoting independence from fossil fuels.
Just the Beginning of Decarbonization
“Our LCL gateway in Hilden is the largest hub for consolidated freight worldwide at Rhenus, and it is central for us to continue moving towards sustainability there. In addition to minimizing direct emissions, Rhenus is taking further steps towards developing services with a verified climate-neutral label. This is just the beginning of our journey towards decarbonizing logistics services,” says Julian Bröer, Regional Head LCL Europe of Rhenus Air & Ocean.
Promising Progress
“Contributing to sustainable logistics is a core concern of Rhenus and our commitment to green logistics. Our promising progress so far strengthens us in this regard. The results and learnings from this pilot project will lay the foundation for our goal of achieving 100% climate neutrality for all LCL transports worldwide by 2030,” says Jan Harnisch, the newly appointed global co-CEO of Rhenus Air & Ocean.
More Climate-Neutral Trade Routes
The pilot project is the first step in Rhenus’s strategy announced in 2021 to fully neutralize the carbon dioxide emissions of the LCL product by 2030. Rhenus also plans to open more climate-neutral trade routes in the future, expand the range of sustainability products, and proactively explore effective ways to achieve efficient emissions reduction.
