23. August 2022With the Fleet Upgrade Program, the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is initiating sustainability improvements for more than 150 ships over the next 5 years. This measure will save between 10 to 13 percent of fuel and CO² emissions, depending on the operating conditions. The investment volume is in the three-digit million range.
(Hamburg) With the loading of the first retrofit propeller at the Port of Hamburg, Hapag-Lloyd is launching its comprehensive Fleet Upgrade Program. The goal: the technical renewal of the existing fleet. The energy-efficient propeller from the German manufacturer MMG will be installed in September on the Hapag-Lloyd 7500 TEU “Ningbo Express” in Dubai. The ship will save between 10 to 13 percent of fuel and CO² emissions, depending on the operating conditions. In total, it is planned to equip at least 86 ships with the new and more efficient propellers. At the same time, 36 ships will receive a new streamlined bow bulb. During the scheduled dry dockings, a drag-reducing underwater coating will also be applied to all ships. The majority of the measures will be implemented by 2025 and will make a significant contribution to achieving the company’s climate goals.
Climate Neutral by 2045
“By the year 2045, we want to be climate neutral. To achieve this, we have set an interim target of reducing the CO² intensity of our own ships by 30 percent by 2030. For this, we are investing in new future-proof ships, but at the same time, we also need to make our existing fleet fit for the future. Through the Fleet Upgrade Program, the energy efficiency of the entire fleet will improve,” says Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, COO of Hapag-Lloyd AG.
Twelve LNG Ships
The investment volume of the Fleet Upgrade Program is in the three-digit million range. Together with the 2 billion Euro order for 12 LNG ships made two years ago, this extensive measure demonstrates that Hapag-Lloyd is consistently and long-term investing in a sustainable, competitive shipping operation.
