Arvato Supply Chain with Tips for Circular Economy in Logistics
14. October 2022After one and a half years of construction, the grand opening of the expanded logistics center in Allhaming, Upper Austria, took place last Thursday. The nearly 50,000 m² expansion not only sets new standards in terms of sustainability but also triples the parcel sorting capacity. Around 900 employees are now working at the site. The total investment amounts to approximately 80 million euros.
(Wien/Allhaming) The opening was attended by honorary guests Mag. Thomas Stelzer, Governor of Upper Austria, Jutta Enzinger, Mayor of Allhaming, and the entire board of Austrian Post AG, consisting of DI Dr. Georg Pölzl, General Director, DI Walter Oblin, Deputy General Director and Board Member for Mail & Finance, and DI Peter Umundum, Board Director for Parcel & Logistics.
“The new logistics center of the Post in Allhaming is a showcase project in terms of efficiency and sustainability. I thank the Post for this investment and the clear commitment to the economic and employment location of Upper Austria, which is further strengthened by this. A successful location can only grow from the optimal interplay of all involved forces: This has once again been achieved here,” says Mag. Thomas Stelzer, Governor of Upper Austria.
“With the expansion of the logistics center, we have implemented a green-yellow showcase project. Through reforestation, greening of the property, a nature park with a biotope, and a green roof with a large photovoltaic system, the Post impressively demonstrates how growth and sustainability can successfully go hand in hand,” explains DI Dr. Georg Pölzl, General Director, Austrian Post AG.
Two Hundred New Jobs
“The expansion in Allhaming creates 200 new jobs, providing important economic incentives for the region. Through highly efficient logistics with state-of-the-art parcel and letter sorting systems, we also ensure security for our customers in a volatile market environment. This allows us to continue offering high quality at fair prices,” explains DI Walter Oblin, Deputy General Director, Board Member for Mail & Finance, Austrian Post AG.
“The logistics center in Upper Austria has today become the absolute heart of Austrian Post. With a sorting capacity of 30,500 parcels per hour, the site in Allhaming is not only the largest parcel logistics center in Austria by far but also ranks among the top places in Europe. This is an accolade in the world of logistics that we can be proud of,” says DI Peter Umundum, Board Director for Parcel & Logistics, Austrian Post AG.
Austria’s Largest Logistics Center
On a plot of land measuring around 200,000 m², about a quarter has been developed with the new building complex, which includes the expansion of the parcel logistics center, a delivery base, and additional office spaces. The existing sorting machines have been upgraded to the latest technology and, with the additionally installed sorting and conveyor technology, achieve a performance of 30,500 parcels per hour. At peak times, up to 330,000 parcels and 1.7 million letters can be processed daily in Allhaming. This sorting capacity is also necessary, as the logistics center processes not only domestic parcels but also import and export volumes to and from Germany and other countries.

Three Million Invested in Traffic Measures
As part of the expansion, the Post has invested around three million euros in traffic construction measures based on a traffic study. In coordination with the state of Upper Austria, the municipality of Allhaming, and ASFINAG, the two intersection points of the Allhaming motorway junction with the Marchtrenker federal road have been redesigned. Through lane widening, dedicated turning lanes, traffic lights, and street lighting, the ease, fluidity, and safety of traffic have been significantly improved.
The site is primarily accessed by trucks with swap body bridges (WAB) from other logistics centers or logistics providers from abroad, reaching the logistics center directly via the motorway. Local traffic in the region remains unaffected.
Green Showcase Project in Upper Austria
In terms of sustainability, the logistics center in Upper Austria is also an absolute showcase project: Through a border planting with native, site-appropriate, and fast-growing shrubs, the property is integrated into the landscape as gently as possible. The operational area itself has been designed with shading trees, native shrub groups, wild shrub hedges, and diverse flower meadows. A special highlight is a nature park with a 120 m² biotope featuring a free-standing dry stone wall, deadwood structures, gravel hills, and seating areas for employees, allowing them to enjoy their breaks in a natural environment.
Native Sedum Sprouts on the Roof
The roof of the expansion has been greened with native sedum sprouts and 75 species of grasses and herbs. The solar biodiversity roof is completed by a photovoltaic system, which now has a capacity of 1.5 megawatts peak (MWp) in its final expansion and generates green electricity for operations as well as for electric vehicles.
