GVZ Region Augsburg Signs Purchase Agreement with DB Netz AG
17. October 2022On the occasion of the Hamburg Port Evening in Prague, Czech Transport Minister Martin Kupka once again highlighted the importance of the Port of Hamburg for Czech foreign trade. He praised the intensified exchange between the two sides to jointly develop cross-border transport routes. Especially in times of crisis, it is important to further strengthen the good cooperation between the two locations.
(Hamburg/Prague) In this context, Martin Kupka, together with his Deputy Minister Václav Bernand, Michal Fridrich (Head of the Department of International Relations and EU), Evžen Vydra (Head of the Department of Water Transport), and Lubomír Fojtů, Director of the Waterways Administration, visited the traditional Hamburg Port Evening in Prague last week. Representing Germany was Dr. Hans-Peter Hinrichsen, Head of the Political Affairs Department and Deputy Ambassador of Germany to the Czech Republic. A total of around 220 guests from the Czech and Slovak logistics and transport sectors gathered at the invitation of the Port of Hamburg Marketing Representation in Prague. Numerous guests from the Hamburg metropolitan region were also welcomed, including Lutz M. Birke, Head of the “Port and Innovation” Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Innovation in Hamburg, and Tino Klemm, CFO of the Hamburg Port Authority.
Vladimír Doboš, Head of the Port of Hamburg Marketing Representation in Prague, was pleased with the broad participation and emphasized the long-standing successful cooperation that has closely connected the Czech and Slovak forwarding industry and shippers with the Port of Hamburg for many years.
Partners in Central and Eastern Europe More Important Than Ever
“Cooperation with EU partners in Central and Eastern Europe is more important for the Port of Hamburg today than ever. The best example is the exchange with the Czech Republic. In 2021, German-Czech trade reached a new record of 94 billion euros, surpassing the levels from before the Corona pandemic. We have a real win-win situation here with great significance for both sides. And we hope to further expand and develop this close cooperation,” said Lutz Birke.
The special role of the Czech Republic in terms of cohesion and unity at the European level in times of crisis is emphasized by Marina Basso Michael, Regional Director Europe at Port of Hamburg Marketing. The Czech Republic is making a very important contribution with its current presidency in the EU and its political priorities such as energy security and strategic resilience of the European economy, according to Basso Michael.
Most Important Port for Czech Foreign Trade
The Port of Hamburg is the most important gateway to the world for Czech seaborne foreign trade. Last year, approximately 500,000 TEU (20-foot standard containers) with origin or destination in the Czech Republic or Slovakia were handled via Hamburg’s container terminals. The most significant mode of transport is the railway, accounting for over 90 percent of the modal split. More than 120 container trains operate weekly between the Port of Hamburg and the Czech and Slovak hinterland terminals. Leading providers of these container train connections are the HHLA subsidiary Metrans and Rail Cargo Operator.
