28. October 2022The new access point Rostock-Industrial Port at the northern end of the A19 federal highway, just before the central access point Rostock-Overseas Port, was completed on schedule and opened to traffic today, October 28, 2022. This event is a milestone for the Northeast branch of the Federal Highway Company, not so much because of the technical implementation, but primarily due to its significance for the entire region.
(Rostock) The director of the Northeast branch, Ronald Normann: “We are pleased to have created significant traffic relief for Rostock and the entire economy, thereby strengthening the economically vital location of the Rostock Port, which is so central to the entire region. Furthermore, the access point will also contribute significantly to traffic safety, as it will help prevent the notably high number of wrong-way drivers at the Warnow Tunnel.”
The adherence to the construction period of eight months is certainly a special achievement in times of skilled labor shortages and various other current challenges. For the director of the Northeast branch, who is himself a true Mecklenburger, it is also a reason to thank all those involved: “Special thanks go to STRABAG AG Rostock, which we commissioned, and all partners of the port operator ROSTOCK PORT. Without the swift and targeted efforts throughout the construction period, the current timely completion would not have been possible.”
Projected Construction Costs Were Maintained
In addition to adhering to the schedule, the projected construction costs, borne by ROSTOCK PORT GmbH, amounting to 2.10 million euros, were also maintained. This is certainly another reason to celebrate, according to the director of the Northeast branch.

In total, ROSTOCK PORT invested more than five million euros in the new highway exit and entrance, which are located at the height of the coal-fired power plant and relieve the central port entrance and exit at the Krummendorf junction. “With this second access point to the A19 federal highway, for which we have long fought and allocated significant investment funds, road traffic to and from the port can be separated early,” explains Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT GmbH.
Decoupling of the Central East-West Road
This will free the East-West road as the central road connection in the overseas port from internal port traffic. “Through the new highway exit, both the grain handling companies and the large industrial companies Liebherr and EEW in the eastern part of the port can now be reached via shorter routes, thereby avoiding traffic congestion to and from the ferry and RoRo terminal in the western port area. Very importantly: The port receives a redundant connection to the regional road network,” says Dr. Gernot Tesch. Additionally, the new access point enables improved transport of oversized components to the industrially shaped eastern port area.
Involvement of Many Participants
“Our thanks for the work done go to all those involved from the Federal Highway Company, DB Netz and DB Immobilien, the civil engineering office of the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock, the State Office for Road Construction and Traffic, KNG, 50 Hertz, Ontras, the municipal utilities, as well as the commissioned planning offices and construction companies,” says the Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT.
