DSV Opens First Fulfillment Factory in Duisburg
8. December 2022Transgourmet GmbH will use the environmentally friendly transport security “Roll-Safe” from RS-Systems GmbH for all Austrian locations starting next year. This means that the food wholesaler is completely eliminating stretch film for load securing. Instead of investing a lot of money in single-use stretch film, Transgourmet saves money with the environmentally friendly, lightweight, and highly durable structure chamber plates, while simultaneously protecting the environment.
(Traun/Uttendorf) “We have been using Roll-Safe after an intensive testing phase since 2018. Currently, around 30,000 individual plates are in use for 15,000 containers. In addition to significant cost savings, the transport security is also much more efficient to handle, allowing a picker in the warehouse to work much faster,” says logistics manager Alexander Khalil. The acquisition costs of the approximately 30,000 plates have already paid off for the wholesaler after two to three years. The Corona crisis, during which the price of stretch film increased by 80 percent compared to early 2020, further accelerated the transition process.
Transgourmet is the second largest company in the wholesale trade for pick-up and delivery in Europe. From traditional inns to exclusive hotels, from local clubs to independent entrepreneurs – the wholesaler serves nearly all conceivable branches of gastronomy. In addition to fresh products such as meat, fish, or dairy products, the range also includes dry food, beverages, as well as tableware and work clothing. In Austria, Transgourmet supplies around 2,500 customers every day from eleven logistics centers with approximately 600 logistics employees.
Many rolls of stretch film can be saved
In the past, the roll containers were wrapped in film meter by meter. “These had to be awkwardly disposed of in the markets. Since waste management is of enormous importance to us, switching to Roll-Safe was a great gain. Our customers in the gastronomy sector have also gratefully accepted the new system,” explains Khalil. The ergonomic aspect was also a factor. “We do not have wrapping towers in any warehouse, so the pickers had to walk around each individual roll container and wrap it by hand. This was physically very demanding,” says the logistics manager.
Transport security has been adapted
After a successful test phase with around 1,600 plates at the Schwarzach (Vorarlberg) location, Transgourmet gradually introduced the transport security at the individual locations. In spring, the new gastronomy wholesale market in Zell am See was added, and in autumn 2022, the Salzburg location. When transport goods are removed, the plates are attached to the sides of the container, which can be closed again after use. The plate is hooked onto the vertical struts of the roll container using two straps. “The advantages are, on the one hand, a hundred percent securing of the goods to be transported and, on the other hand, the continued stackability of the roll containers,” says Martin Köllner. The owner of RS-Systems faced the challenge at Transgourmet that structure chamber plates did not fit exactly on the roll containers of Transgourmet. He adapted the transport security by having the plates made slightly wider and longer to ensure safe transport of the goods.
