MBS Logistics Expands Global Management with Joerg Roehl
Jan 19, 2023 at 7:40 PMThe year 2022 brought good conditions for shipping in the first half of the year. The focus was primarily on classic goods such as animal feed, grain, stones, etc., while the Ukraine conflict caused a shift in trade flows. Ship transports from the east have significantly decreased, while there was a noticeable trend towards the western ports (Rotterdam, Germany). After the completion of a large-volume project business from 2021, it was not possible to match the peak value of the previous year. The water/land transshipment in 2022 amounts to 562,000 tons, which is below the long-term average.
(Ennshafen) In the second half of the year, there were temporary restrictions due to low water levels, which led to lightering of ships or the shifting of some transports to rail. Especially during low water, rail is an important cooperation partner for shipping.
There was an increased demand in the area of high & heavy transshipment. For example, there were ship loadings of oversized containers for a brewery or of plant parts for the aerospace industry. Heavy and oversized goods can optimally utilize the advantages of Danube shipping due to their large dimensions and high weights.
The infrastructure at the site has been further modernized, and the companies located there are clearly on a growth path. First – DDSG opened Austria’s first floating dock, allowing maintenance and repairs to be carried out on their own ships on-site. Fixkraft animal feed completed the expansion of the organic mixing line, and Donausäge Rumplmayr commissioned the new pellet plant in autumn 2022 with an investment volume of around 20 million.
The Container Terminal Enns was highly utilized with an annual transshipment of 457,500 TEU in 2022. Due to the large availability of storage areas at the terminal, significant quantities of containers could be temporarily stored for the economy and shipping companies and called up at short notice when needed. The high-frequency rail services to the seaports were further expanded and even extended to the route to the port of Rijeka.
The port infrastructure is becoming increasingly digital. The project for the digital recording of transshipment data has been implemented on the software side and will enter test operation in early 2023. Through targeted information and data exchange, cooperation with the transshipment companies is expected to become even more efficient in the future.
