THE FREIGHT RAILWAYS with Statement on the Federal Network Agency
21. January 2023The Gallozzi Group – the parent company of SCT – and Liebherr are building on a partnership that began in 2017. The new LHM 600 HR strengthens an existing fleet of four other Liebherr mobile harbor cranes. It is intended for container operations and is expected to be in operation around the clock. The reliability and flexibility of the crane, as well as the trust in the service, were the main reasons for the customer to continue investing in Liebherr machines.
(Rostock/Salerno) The Salerno Container Terminal, or SCT, is a maritime hub that connects global container shipping networks with the import and export markets of Southern and Central Italy. The Port of Salerno was first visited by a container ship in 1977 and today ranks among the leading Italian port facilities, supplying more than 40% of the country’s consumers. SCT already has a variety of Liebherr port equipment and mobile harbor cranes, including two LHM 800 and two LHM 600, both in the High Rise or HR version.
The new crane is equipped with a tower extension of 12 meters. Cranes of this type benefit from better visibility of the cargo/containers thanks to a higher cabin, which for the new crane is 37.1 meters. The pivot point is also higher, allowing for the servicing of larger ships. With the crane’s greater reach, more rows of containers can be handled. The new crane is also equipped with VDL double-lift spreaders with
a capacity of 2 x 32.5 tons. This makes the crane strong enough to lift two containers simultaneously.
This enables a particularly efficient operation in container handling. Additionally, this delivery achieved a remarkably fast turnaround time: the order was completed in November, and the crane was delivered to SCT on December 29, 2022.
Maintaining High Operational Efficiency
“The competitiveness of ports is no longer measured solely by traffic volume,” explains Agostino Gallozzi, President of Salerno Container Terminal. “The so-called connectivity index is becoming increasingly important, meaning the number of different markets in the world to which the port can guarantee a maritime connection for local businesses. The use of Liebherr mobile harbor cranes is invaluable for maintaining high operational efficiency and commercial capacity. Our continuous investments in these machines have helped us achieve targeted growth and obtain a much stronger connectivity index.”
Intended for Continuous Operation
The new LHM 600 HR will enhance the quay for container handling and is intended for continuous operation. The mobile harbor crane has a reach of 58 meters and is another important component of SCT’s port infrastructure, which is currently supported by four other Liebherr mobile harbor cranes. Two of these cranes can service post-Panamax ships and are capable of handling up to 22 rows of containers across, equivalent to a ship capacity of 15,000 TEU. SCT operates year-round. Container traffic increased towards the end of 2022, including a TEU growth of 11.64% and 11.16% in October and November, respectively.
SCT has further invested in its port infrastructure and now records an average of 21 weekly container ship landings. With the expanding operations of the terminal, the new LHM 600 will help SCT grow and meet future business requirements.
