8. June 2023As part of the Basel Port Festival 2023, the Logistics Cluster Region Basel invited its members to a special tour with the “Haafebähnli”. The tour was then open to all visitors. The route also passed the site of the planned, but not yet approved, Gateway Basel Nord. There, primarily nature conservationists, but also other interest groups, are opposing the project.
(Basel) Last weekend, the Northwest Switzerland region celebrated the Basel Port Festival 2023. The occasion marks 101 years of the Rhine Port Basel-Kleinhüningen, the oldest Rhine port in Basel and Switzerland. The 100th anniversary was originally planned for last year but was postponed to this year due to uncertainties surrounding Corona. Thousands of visitors flocked to the port in beautiful weather.
The Logistics Cluster Region Basel, an initiative of the Chamber of Commerce of both Basels, and the Gateway Basel Nord took this opportunity to introduce the visitors of the port festival to the Rhine port and, in particular, the site of the planned Gateway Basel Nord with a “Haafebähnli”. In a “special tour,” members of the Logistics Cluster also seized the opportunity to gather more information about the various projects in the Basel Rhine port firsthand.
In a relaxed setting, Martin Dätwyler (Director of the Chamber of Commerce of both Basels), Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (President of the Chamber of Commerce of both Basels), and Martin Haller (Chairman of the Board of Gateway Basel Nord AG) welcomed the guests of the “special tour” with the “Haafebähnli”.
Own Information Stand
The Logistics Cluster Region Basel also used the port festival to raise public awareness of logistics issues at an information stand. The “Wheel of Fortune” was very popular, with long lines forming in front of it. The good placement right at the entrance to the festival mile ensured the necessary foot traffic. In a specially set up container, the planned Gateway Basel Nord was presented in a film.
The Basel Port Festival 2023 is about to enter its third day, and visitors will again line up to spin the Wheel of Fortune of the Logistics Cluster Region Basel.
The individual projects in the port are interconnected
Should the Swiss Federal Council grant approval for the construction of the Gateway Basel Nord, it would trigger a whole chain of further projects. For example, a new harbor basin 3 and a new harbor station are planned. However, the projects are so interconnected that without the Gateway, the other planned objects would also make no sense.
The general population of the Canton of Basel-Stadt is in favor of the construction of the Gateway Basel Nord and already voted in favor of the project in November 2020, but some groups are still opposing the planned trimodal project. While nature and animal protection activists lead the opposition, there are also other forces in the no camp, such as the village association pro Kleinhüningen or the IG Schiffsführer Basel. Politicians from all parties are also part of this committee.
When and if the Gateway Basel Nord can be realized is still unclear
It could still take a long time before the Gateway Basel Nord and other projects are developed in the Basel Rhine port, if they can even be realized at all. The Logistics Cluster Region Basel and the Gateway Basel Nord took the opportunity to present the planned objects to a broad audience at the port festival and to raise awareness for them.

The port festival was a thoroughly successful event
Events and festivals outdoors require good weather. The organizers were clearly blessed with the “luck of the diligent,” as they managed to put together a thoroughly successful event. The event was filled with many great attractions, and thousands of visitors flocked to the quays of the Basel Rhine port.
Since the Basel Rhine ports are largely dominated by freight shipping, with only a small part serving passenger shipping, the weekend raised public awareness of the importance of the Rhine ports for the Basel region and for Switzerland’s supply.
