Avison Young Sees Changed Location Decisions Due to Climate
14. July 2023While the material flow within a logistics or production building may be well organized, inadequately organized delivery traffic on the external premises can quickly hinder the efficiency of intralogistics. With a customized yard management system, LogBer ensures smooth processes and guarantees maximum visibility of all goods present in the respective production environment.
(Ahrensburg) “When optimizing intralogistics, the focus is often solely on facilitating or accelerating the goods withdrawal from a warehouse and thus the material flow,” says LogBer Managing Director Jonas Bauschke. “Sometimes it is forgotten that the goods do not find their place in the warehouse by themselves but are usually delivered or picked up by truck.” With the increasing productivity of a company, the interface between transport and storage can quickly develop into a critical bottleneck, notes Jonas Bauschke: “If truck traffic on the external premises is not organized as carefully as the logistics processes within the storage areas, processes can quickly come to a standstill, and the increased efficiency in the core area of the company is undermined.”
Yard management as an important element of intralogistics
For LogBer, intralogistics begins “at the threshold of the company premises,” and accordingly, yard management regularly counts as an integral component of the logistics concepts developed by LogBer. As an example, Jonas Bauschke mentions the recently implemented solution for the efficient handling of truck traffic on the premises of the central warehouse of a leading retail chain. “In the past, suppliers were simply processed at the entrance in the order of arrival and assigned to the next available ramp,” reports Jonas Bauschke. “This procedure took a lot of time and caused traffic jams on the access roads; moreover, particularly urgent deliveries could not always be given the intended priority.”
With a yard management system designed by LogBer and implemented by specialized providers, traffic jams are a thing of the past. Instead of patiently waiting in line or having to temporarily look for a parking space, suppliers first head to a newly established parking lot outside the company premises. Through a service terminal set up there, the truck driver checks in via self check-in. While receiving safety instructions, the goods receipt booking is prepared. An end-to-end solution is employed, managing all relevant processes from the order in the ERP system to the time slot booking for delivery and the goods receipt booking to the truck checkout. Without further formalities, the assigned ramp on the company premises can then be accessed directly. The status messages from the yard management software can also be forwarded to the company’s internal warehouse management system to ensure that any necessary special equipment or additional personnel for loading or unloading is available in time.
No more traffic jams at the entrance
“Since the entire handling of delivery traffic has been transferred to the yard management system, the situation before and on the company premises has significantly improved,” notes LogBer Managing Director Jonas Bauschke. “No more traffic jams at the entrance, and the hassle with supplier trucks blocking internal parking spaces due to lack of alternatives during waiting times is also over.” And because everything now runs smoothly in front of the ramp, the potentials of intralogistics in the central warehouse can also be fully utilized.
