14. September 2023The Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV) has granted Gateway Basel Nord AG the planning approval for the construction of a new transshipment terminal in Basel-Kleinhüningen. With the connection of rail, road, and the Rhine, a transport platform is being created that will contribute to the supply of Switzerland. During the planning phase, various aspects, particularly from an ecological perspective, have been revised multiple times.
(Bern/Basel) Gateway Basel Nord AG, in collaboration with the Swiss Rhine Ports, is planning a trimodal transport terminal with gateway functionality in Basel-Kleinhüningen. It is intended to serve as an interface between freight transport by rail, road, and the Rhine. The transshipment of containers between international and national freight trains is to be made significantly more efficient – with the aim of transporting unaccompanied combined freight over as long distances as possible by rail on a self-sustaining basis.
The bimodal terminal of the first expansion stage enables the transshipment between international and national freight trains as well as from rail to road. In a second expansion stage, the port connection will be realized later.
On September 11, 2023, the BAV granted the planning approval (building permit) for the first expansion stage. The preceding approval process was complex. It particularly concerned the question of whether intervention in the dry meadow on the site is permissible and how this intervention should be compensated. Gateway Basel Nord AG has revised the project multiple times in this regard during the process and made various optimizations. With these adjustments, the BAV was able to grant the approval now.
Appeal Period Lasts 30 Days
If no appeal is filed with the Federal Administrative Court within 30 days, Gateway Basel Nord AG can subsequently start the realization of the project. The estimated construction costs amount to around 130 million Swiss francs. The federal government supports loading facilities within the framework of the relocation policy with investment contributions. It is participating in the first phase of Gateway Basel Nord with 83 million. The second expansion stage with the harbor basin is estimated at 155 million Swiss francs – with a federal share of around 32.4 million.
