HPE on Safety in the Production of Wooden Packaging
3. October 2023Bertschi, a company in chemical logistics, and Dow Inc., a global leader in materials science, have launched an advanced pilot project for sustainable transport from the Netherlands to Italy, integrating intermodal rail transport and trucks powered by biofuels. This collaboration represents an important milestone for both companies in their commitment to sustainability and the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
(Dürrenäsch/Horgen) Bertschi, the market leader in intermodal chemical logistics in Europe, continuously works on strategies to improve the sustainability of its door-to-door transport solutions. Today, Bertschi handles 90% of all European land transport via intermodal rail, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by 230,000 tons per year. The focus of these efforts is on optimizing the first and last mile of the supply chain, which is managed on the road. Hydrated vegetable oil (HVO) proves to be a valuable substitute for conventional diesel.
HVO, derived from renewable raw materials, is recognized worldwide for its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions. By using HVO for road transport in the supply chain, both Dow and Bertschi proactively advance environmental goals and advocate for responsible logistics solutions. The key benefits of integrating HVO into logistics operations include a significant reduction of CO2 emissions on the first and last mile by up to 90%, a lower dependence on fossil fuels, and a potential improvement in engine performance.
Biofuel-Powered Shunting Vehicles
As part of the pilot project, a special fleet of Bertschi trucks powered by HVO will be deployed to significantly reduce CO2 emissions on the last mile. The project includes the sustainable transport of chemical Dow products from Terneuzen in the Netherlands to a recipient in Northern Italy. The biofuel-powered shunting vehicles will initially handle the loading in Terneuzen. The main route to Italy will then be managed by intermodal rail transport from the Bertschi terminal located near the Dow plant. Finally, a Bertschi HVO truck will be used for the last mile from the Italian intermodal terminal. This initiative demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of a sustainable door-to-door supply chain with the integration of intermodal rail transport and biofuel-powered trucks. The goal is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of emissions reduction and environmental benefits of HVO compared to conventional diesel fuel, focusing on minimizing the CO2 footprint associated with transport activities.
“We are excited about the potential of HVO as a sustainable alternative to diesel for our first and last mile transports,” said Santiago Gonzalez, Managing Director Bertschi Liquids. “This pilot program underscores our commitment to environmentally friendly practices and enhances the efficiency and sustainability of our logistics services,” Gonzalez added.
Collective Responsibility for Sustainability
Chloé Sanders, Senior Sourcing Manager at Dow, shares this view: “We firmly believe in collective responsibility for sustainability. Initiatives like this pilot program are an example of our commitment to reducing our CO2 footprint and promoting a positive impact on the environment.” Through joint initiatives, Dow and Bertschi aim not only to pave the way for sustainable logistics solutions but also to inspire a broader shift in the industry towards a greener, more environmentally conscious future.
