Blood Transported e.V. Achieves Much in One Year
21. November 2023Lufthansa Cargo is further advancing the modernization at the Frankfurt hub with the LCCevolution project: In the northern part of Frankfurt Airport, construction of the new 40-meter high high-bay warehouse, including the automated transport system and the first building modules, began in August of this year. In addition to the new construction, the existing buildings and warehouses of the Lufthansa Cargo Center are also set to be upgraded and modernized or replaced by new buildings.
(Frankfurt/Main) Lufthansa Cargo is investing nearly 500 million euros in this major project, which is expected to be completed by 2030 and covers a construction area of over 70,000 m2.
“With a handling share of about 80 percent of Lufthansa Cargo’s global freight volume, the Frankfurt hub significantly determines the operational success of Lufthansa Cargo,” says Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo. The modernizations and new constructions will further improve handling times at Lufthansa Cargo’s central location and increase efficiency. “For all our customers, this means higher handling speed, smoother transport processes, and an improvement in service quality,” adds Bhat.
The implementation and detailed planning of the central construction measures for the next eight years will be carried out with the construction partner Ed. Züblin AG from Frankfurt. “With Züblin, we have gained an experienced expert in the field of structural and civil engineering who supports us with tailored and precise solutions. We are excited to tackle the largest construction project of the Lufthansa Group together with Ed. Züblin AG,” emphasizes Stefan Dürr, head of the infrastructure program at Lufthansa Cargo and project manager of LCCevolution. In addition to Ed. Züblin AG, the engineering company BLEICHERT Automation GmbH & Co. KG is involved as a central partner in the construction of the high-bay warehouse. The planning of the logistics systems for the major project is additionally carried out with the expertise of io-consultants GmbH & Co. KG. The contract signing of all partners was successfully conducted at Frankfurt Airport on November 21.
Challenge: Realizing construction projects while maintaining regular operations
The completion of the first parts of the automated transport system and the construction of the first two building modules are expected between 2023 and 2027. “The special challenge of this project is to realize a complex construction project while ensuring the regular operation of the hub around the clock and gradually improving it with the commissioning of the new elements,” explains Dietmar Focke, Board Member Operations at Lufthansa Cargo. Johannes Graf, Technical Director of Ed. Züblin AG, adds: “The revitalization and renewal of the cargo hub at Frankfurt Airport gives us the opportunity to demonstrate our technical expertise at one of Europe’s largest transport hubs. We are proud to accompany the project together with Lufthansa Cargo from the planning phase to construction execution. We thank you for the cooperative and constructive collaboration.”
