Mader Partners with Indian Freight Forwarder Fretlog
11. December 2023DB and DB Cargo are currently facing significant challenges. As reported by the Handelsblatt, the company expects a loss of around 1.2 billion euros for 2023. While a loss was anticipated, the decline in profits at its subsidiary DB Schenker is significantly higher than expected. Additionally, the conflict with the GDL union is severely impacting Deutsche Bahn in both passenger and freight transport.

(Berlin/Mainz) Deutsche Bahn is currently under severe pressure. According to the Handelsblatt, profits at DB Schenker are falling much lower than expected. This, in turn, has consequences for the expected annual results at the parent company Deutsche Bahn. The anticipated loss for 2023 at Deutsche Bahn amounts to a staggering 1.2 billion euros.
Transport Industry Crisis Also Affects DB Schenker
The transport industry is suffering from various global crises, and DB Schenker is feeling the impact as well. However, it was also to be expected that profits could not always soar as they did during the pandemic, when everything seemed to run smoothly. Nevertheless, the company remains committed to its sales intentions.
Union VDL Unmoved by Loss
Another “construction site” for Deutsche Bahn is the struggle with the VDL union. Despite the enshrinement of the right to strike in the constitution, understanding is dwindling on all sides. This is “class struggle” and has nothing to do with the enforcement of workers’ rights. Inflation is gradually decreasing, but the GDL is not backing down from its demands.
Freight Trains Will Be Struck First
As the largest European freight railway with over 3,500 trains per day, DB Cargo primarily serves the German economy, power plants, refineries, and seaports. This week, freight transport has not yet resolved a significant backlog: the sudden onset of winter with record snowfall has caused hundreds of freight trains to wait for departure or interrupt their journeys.
This backlog of freight trains has not yet been fully addressed. A 24-hour strike means that power plants and critical production chains, such as those in steel mills, chemical plants, or automotive factories, cannot be supplied or are delayed. DB Cargo will do everything possible in coordination with customers to avoid halting industrial production. However, this cannot be entirely ruled out.
