18. February 2024The Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) summarizes the developments in road freight transport based on truck toll data in the annual edition of the “Toll Traffic KOMPAKT” format for the year 2023 in a concise and clear manner.
(Köln) Since 2013, the share of driving performance provided by Euro 6 vehicles in the federal territory has been increasing and is around 95% in 2023. Compared to 2022, this has risen by about 3 percentage points.
The share of driving performance from non-resident to resident vehicles has marginally increased in 2023. The driving performance share of non-resident vehicles now stands at 50.5%. For the first time in 2023, the driving performances of non-resident vehicles exceed those of resident vehicles.
Largest Share of Driving Performance in Bavaria
About half of the driving performance in 2023 is accounted for by the three federal states of Bavaria (19.9%), North Rhine-Westphalia (17.6%), and Lower Saxony (12.8%). Compared to the previous year, the majority of federal states show no or only marginal changes in the share of driving performance.
Largest Decline in City States
Driving performance has decreased significantly compared to the previous year, especially in the city states of Hamburg, Bremen, and Berlin, by between 4.7% and 6.8%. The smallest decreases were recorded in the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt (-2.4%), Brandenburg (-2.1%), and Baden-Württemberg (-1.9%).
Change in Cross-Border Traffic
The cross-border traffic index has decreased for almost all countries compared to the previous year. The exception is cross-border traffic to the Czech Republic, which has increased by 2.3%. Other border crossings show a decline between 3.5% and 6.1%. The largest declines were recorded at the borders to Denmark (-6.4%), Switzerland (-7.6%), and Luxembourg (-8.4%).
