Austrian Post Fully Converts Truck Fleet to HVO
27. February 2024DHL and Formula 1® have announced the extension of their partnership today. DHL will continue to be the official logistics partner responsible for the global transport of equipment for the FIA Formula One World Championship™ in the coming years. With over 40 years of experience in motorsport logistics, including 20 years as the official logistics partner of Formula 1, DHL is the longest-serving global partner in motorsport.
(Bonn) Aiming to achieve net-zero emissions in Formula 1 by 2030, the partnership has entered a more sustainable era over the past three years. The number of trucks powered by biofuel used for the European leg of this year’s racing season has doubled to 37. This reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 83 percent compared to diesel-powered trucks.
“We are pleased to extend our partnership and are proud to be the longest-serving global partner of the series. As the official logistics partner of Formula 1, DHL has ensured the smooth running of races for 20 years now,” explains Arjan Sissing, Global Head of Brand Marketing at DHL Group. “Both companies share a strong commitment to sustainability goals and a common vision to make the sport greener and more efficient. As a pioneer in green logistics, we are excited to continue our collaboration with Formula 1 to achieve these goals together.”
Significant Transformation in 20 Years
During their 20-year partnership, Formula 1 and DHL have experienced a significant transformation, particularly through an expanded calendar. This year, 24 races will take place, and the calendar has been optimized to ensure a better flow of races in certain regions and to reduce transport routes between events. However, the most significant change occurred in 2019 when Formula 1 put sustainability at the forefront and announced its goal of net-zero emissions. DHL’s world-leading multimodal logistics, which includes road, sea, and air freight, is a crucial factor in reducing carbon-related emissions in logistics. Leading in green logistics, DHL was the first to deploy fuel-efficient Boeing 777 aircraft last year, which has led to a significant CO2 saving of 17 percent compared to conventional aircraft. DHL and Formula 1 continuously drive the sustainability agenda forward to achieve their goals. Further environmentally friendly logistics initiatives are planned for the upcoming season.
Crucial Part of the Racing Series
Jonny Haworth, Director of Commercial Partnerships at Formula 1, says: “As our longest-standing partner, DHL has become a crucial part of delivering our racing series, and we look forward to continuing this successful collaboration for many more years. Our partnership has transformed the sport in many ways. DHL has greatly supported us in our transition to a more sustainable sport, and looking towards 2030, this will continue to be of great importance. Given the ongoing development of sustainable logistics, I look forward to seeing the positive impact and innovations that are to come next.”
Formula 1 Returns to China
This weekend marks the start: On February 29, the highly anticipated Bahrain Grand Prix will kick off this year’s racing season. The 2024 race calendar includes races in 21 countries across five continents, featuring three triple headers and five double headers with three and two races on consecutive weekends, respectively. Additionally, Formula 1 returns to China for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. DHL manages the enormous logistical effort behind the scenes of Formula 1, transporting up to 1,400 tons of valuable and sensitive cargo to each race, including the racing cars, tires, spare parts, fuel, broadcasting equipment, and marketing and hospitality supplies.
Motorsport Team Includes 100 Logistics Experts
The DHL Motorsports team consists of 100 logistics experts, with about half of them working on-site at each event. For selected European races on the Formula 1 calendar, the team will use a new motorhome as a command center. The sustainable motorhome, equipped with solar panels, charging, and recycling stations, is set to be deployed this season and will be transported by a biofuel truck.
