Apr 16, 2024 at 7:59 PMHapag-Lloyd today announces its Strategy 2030, a comprehensive strategy that sets the course for the company regarding quality, sustainability, innovation, and operational efficiency in a rapidly evolving maritime industry. Over the past five years, the company has made significant progress in customer satisfaction, financial stability, and market expansion, particularly in key regions such as India and Africa.
(Hamburg) The Strategy 2030 builds on the Strategy 2023, which solidified Hapag-Lloyd’s reputation as a customer-oriented shipping company. The new strategy is the result of extensive market and customer analyses, as well as intensive internal collaboration involving the company’s global experts. First-class customer service and environmental responsibility are at the forefront of Strategy 2030. At the same time, there is a focus on innovative digital solutions to successfully navigate the constantly changing global landscape.
The Five Pillars of Strategy 2030
Hapag-Lloyd’s Strategy 2030 is based on five pillars:
- Pure Play Plus: Hapag-Lloyd continues to invest in its fleet and service network to strengthen its core business in liner shipping while expanding its terminal portfolio, supported by the new business unit “Terminal & Infrastructure.” Additionally, the shipping company aims to increase its share in inland transport to directly support its core business.
- Top 5 Global Container Line: With a focus on strategic growth initiatives, Hapag-Lloyd aims to solidify its position among the top five global container lines and strengthen its presence in key markets such as Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and Pacific trade through above-market growth.
- Undisputed Number One for Quality: Hapag-Lloyd will intensify its quality strategy and aims for an on-time delivery rate of over 80 percent. Furthermore, the company will enhance operational quality, customer service, and the simplicity of business transactions with its customers. The Gemini Cooperation with Maersk will be an important step in this direction, as will the strengthening of internal processes.
- Sustainability Driver: Hapag-Lloyd is committed to its environmental responsibility and aims to help limit global warming to the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement. The shipping company has pledged to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by about one-third by 2030 and to achieve a net-zero fleet by 2045. This will be accomplished through a range of measures, including fleet modernization, new propulsion technologies, and the use of alternative fuels.
- Top Performing Carrier: Hapag-Lloyd aims to remain one of the leading companies in the industry by utilizing state-of-the-art IT solutions, increasing productivity, maintaining a consistent performance and cost orientation, developing employees, and promoting talent.
Robust Strategy is Crucial
“We are very proud of our Strategy 2030, which demonstrates our commitment to quality, sustainability, and customer satisfaction,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. “We operate in a very dynamic industry characterized by changing customer needs, so a robust strategy is crucial. With Strategy 2030, we are positioned to assert ourselves as one of the world’s leading liner shipping companies. In doing so, we will not only enhance value for our customers and partners but also make a significant contribution to the decarbonization of our industry. It is our most ambitious strategy to date.”
