24. September 2024What is increasingly becoming a reality in the USA and China is also of interest to people in Germany: autonomous trucks. Two-thirds (64 percent) of Germans generally have a positive attitude towards autonomous trucks: 23 percent definitely support autonomous trucks on public roads, while another 41 percent are somewhat in favor of practical operations.
(Berlin) However, 32 percent are against autonomous trucks, with 20 percent expressing a general disapproval and 12 percent not wanting to see autonomous trucks on public roads at all. These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, conducted among 1,005 people in Germany aged 16 and older, on the occasion of the logistics fair IAA Transportation this week.
“Autonomous trucks will massively change logistics and freight transport. They have the potential to increase the safety and efficiency of freight transport and can also help alleviate the long-standing driver shortage in the logistics industry,” says Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder. “However, before autonomous trucks can drive on our roads, several technical, legal, and infrastructural hurdles still need to be overcome. For example, Germany still lacks large-scale trials, digital upgrades of roads, and the corresponding adjustments to traffic regulations.”
