Kühne+Nagel acquires majority stake in IMC Logistics
14. November 2024At the end of October, a special vehicle was delivered that operates in an unusual area! A Mercedes-Benz Atego 4×4 all-wheel drive was delivered to the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn. The vehicle is specifically designed for demanding operations in the mountains. Equipped with a Kiesling cooling system, it enables the safe transport of temperature-sensitive goods.
(Dornstadt/Garmisch-Partenkirchen) “We are pleased to deliver a special product to our customer and partner, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn!” said Niklas Kiesling, Managing Director of Kiesling Fahrzeugbau GmbH. The vehicle allows for safe transport even under difficult conditions. Permanent all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance, and a high payload defy the adverse conditions on the mountain.
In 2008, Kiesling had already built a structure on a wagon of the cogwheel railway of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn, which is still in use today. Since then, the gastronomy on the Zugspitze has been further expanded, and new requirements have been placed on logistics.
With the new vehicle, supply chains in the gastronomic facilities of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn can now be optimized. With now nine restaurants, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn is one of the largest gastronomic operations in Bavaria. For this reason, and due to the special location of the restaurants on the mountain, logistics for supplying the businesses has become increasingly complex in recent years. To optimize these processes, a logistics center for supplying all restaurants is now being established in Grainau. This allows for the ordering of larger quantities and containers, thereby reducing the number of deliveries and, consequently, the overall CO2 footprint.
Deliveries Anticyclical to Guest Traffic
With the new refrigerated vehicle, it is also possible to supply the gastronomic businesses anticyclically to guest traffic at the cable cars and access roads. For example, deliveries can take place in the afternoon when the arrival traffic has passed and fewer guests are taking the cable cars up the mountain. Additionally, during high guest traffic, goods can also be delivered on short notice, which means significantly improved flexibility in ordering food and beverages. With the new vehicle, a flexible and sustainable supply of the gastronomic businesses on the Zugspitze, in Garmisch-Classic, and at Wank is now possible.
