Globalization Remains at Record Levels Despite Tensions
Nov 19, 2024 at 8:38 PMThe Greven logistics service provider Fiege is developing a multi-user center in Borna in the district of Leipzig. Since September, earthworks have been underway for the state-of-the-art property, which will provide around 38,000 square meters of logistics space for customers from various industries.
(Borna/Greven) The Fiege Group has begun construction on its new logistics center in Borna. Southeast of Leipzig, the contract logistics expert is developing a multi-user capable property on a plot of land measuring nearly 80,000 square meters. In the dynamic logistics region of Leipzig/Halle, more than 38,000 square meters of logistics space will be created across four units, along with additional administrative, office, and social spaces. With a hall floor featuring WGK-3 sealing, the logistics center meets the requirements for hazardous material storage. The project, which is scheduled for completion in late summer 2025, is being realized by Fiege Real Estate.
Sustainability is a key focus in the planning – both in terms of building materials and equipment. The logistics center will feature an innovative wooden facade system and resource-saving mineral wool insulation. The building will be heated using air-water heat pumps, and only highly efficient LED lamps will be used for lighting. Kai Alfermann, who, along with Thoralf Schuster and Nikolaus von Blomberg, is responsible as Managing Director for Fiege Real Estate, explains: “As with all our projects, we are also adhering to the latest construction and environmental standards in Borna. Our goal is to set new benchmarks in sustainability with our logistics properties and thus contribute to the climate transition.”
With consideration for the surrounding landscape, the logistics service provider has developed a biodiversity concept for its construction project. To generate energy, Fiege is equipping the hall roof with two powerful photovoltaic systems. Approximately 10,000 PV modules with a total output of 4,590 kilowatt-peak are planned, which will partially cover the logistics center’s own energy needs. Upon completion of the logistics center, 40 charging stations for electric vehicles will be available, with the possibility of expanding this number to 80 if needed. In addition, Fiege is implementing automated building management technology and monitoring tools to continuously optimize energy consumption.
Developing logistics properties into small power plants
With the construction project in Borna, Fiege aims for the EG-40 standard as well as the Gold standard (version 2023) of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Alfermann adds: “The many measures in the area of energy solutions – from PV systems to green heat to prospective storage solutions – contribute to our goal of developing our logistics properties into small sustainable power plants. Our new logistics center in Borna fits seamlessly into this vision.”
