Feb 14, 2025 at 7:43 PMThe Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) summarizes the developments in road freight transport based on truck toll data in the annual edition of the format “Toll Traffic COMPACT” for the year 2024 in a concise and clear manner. The mileage of vehicles with at least four axles on highways in 2024 is at a similarly high level as in 2023, but 2.0% below the average of the last five years.
(Köln) About 97% of the mileage is provided by Euro-6 vehicles. This share has been continuously increasing since 2013 and was approximately 2 percentage points above the previous year’s value at around 97%. The truck fleet used in Germany is thus becoming cleaner and more modern.
Share of Mileage from Local and Non-Local Vehicles at Nearly the Same Level
The share of mileage from non-local vehicles has decreased by 0.1 percentage points in 2024. Both shares are around 50%.
Largest Share of Mileage in Bavaria
About half of the mileage in 2024 is accounted for by the three federal states of Bavaria (19.9%), North Rhine-Westphalia (17.5%), and Lower Saxony (13.1%). Compared to the previous year, the majority of federal states show no or only a marginal change in the share of mileage.
Toll Mileage in 2024 Amounted to 40.1 Billion Kilometers
In 2024, toll-liable commercial vehicles covered approximately 40.1 billion kilometers on the toll road network (about 52,000 km) in Germany. This is 1.2% more than in 2023.
When differentiating mileage by the registration states of the vehicles, German trucks covered around 23.0 billion toll-liable kilometers in 2024, which is about 2.0% more than the previous year. The toll-liable mileage of vehicles from other registration states was about 17.2 billion km, which is 0.3% more compared to 2023.
It should be noted that since July 1, 2024, vehicles with a technically permissible total weight of 3.5 tons are also subject to tolls.
