Logistikbude Wins Innovators’ Pitch in the ‘Smart Logistics’ Category
20. March 2025Marcegaglia’s latest acquisition, the LHM 600, marks a significant milestone as it is the 2,000th mobile harbour crane produced and delivered by Liebherr. This crane is not only a testament to Liebherr’s technical expertise but also a tribute to five decades of innovation in the maritime industry. The LHM 600 will play an important role in the handling of steel goods and is the sixth mobile harbour crane from Liebherr for the Italian company.
(Rostock/Ravenna) For the 2,000th time, tradition meets innovation. The LHM 600, which is to be delivered to Ravenna, Italy, will take on a central role in Marcegaglia’s logistics. The crane is perfectly suited for handling ships up to New-Panamax size. Its main task will be the handling of steel products such as coils, sheets, and strips. The hydrostatic drive and control systems enable precise and seamless cargo handling. The goal: to achieve overall more flexible and smoother processes. Another remarkable highlight is the unique, handcrafted design of the slewing platform, inspired by the maritime heritage of the two cities of Rostock and Ravenna, adding a touch of craftsmanship to this historically significant technical marvel.
A Symbol of Innovation and Partnership
The special design of the slewing platform of the 2,000th LHM embodies the spirit of innovation and the strong partnership between Liebherr and Marcegaglia. The design features a double-sided motif. One side is Italian and includes a landmark from Ravenna, the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. It also depicts dockworkers engaged in port logistics and an Italian inscription. The other side features a German text and a lighthouse that highlights the maritime and industrial tradition of Liebherr Rostock, from where the crane originates. These messages reflect the history and collaboration between Liebherr Rostock and Marcegaglia. Ultimately, the design reflects the connection between German engineering precision and Italian passion, symbolizing the shared commitment to innovation and quality in the maritime industry.
Since the turn of the millennium, the partnership between the two companies and cultures has been a defining feature in the development of the Port of Ravenna. The introduction of the first Liebherr mobile harbour crane in 2001, an LHM 400, marked the beginning of an era of change. Over the years, the fleet has been expanded with four additional mobile harbour cranes, each a testament to the enduring collaboration and shared commitment to excellence. And now, as the largest LHM in the Ravenna fleet, the sixth mobile harbour crane offers additional logistics capacity with style.
On the Path to Further Success
A handover ceremony is planned for the summer in Ravenna to honor the significant collaboration between the two companies rooted in family tradition. “This milestone, the LHM 600, exemplifies our commitment to providing our customers with forward-looking solutions,” says Andreas Ritschel, Sales Manager for mobile harbour cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. By integrating the crane into their logistics network, Marcegaglia will further optimize its processes and support the company’s strategic goals. In conjunction with Liebherr’s global service network, the company can also count on consistent support and maintenance for its new crane. Ultimately, this LHM 600 symbolizes the synergy between two industry leaders moving forward with a shared commitment to excellence.
