Kraftverkehr Emsland Becomes New Partner of Online Systemlogistik
24. June 2025Today, Monday, a special conference train is traveling from the island of Rügen to the federal capital. On board are representatives from politics, administration, business, and civil society – including district administrators, mayors, members of the Bundestag, members of the state government, as well as journalists. Representatives of Mukran Port are also on board.
(Mukran/Rügen/Berlin) The goal is to exchange ideas with members of the federal government, the budget committee, and the Federal Ministry of Transport about the urgently needed expansion of the Vorpommern-Magistrale – the railway connection Berlin–Angermünde–Stralsund–Sassnitz–Mukran. Mukran Port is also present with representatives on the train and at the discussions in Berlin.
Infrastructure determines the future prospects of Mukran Port
“The Vorpommern-Magistrale is a crucial lever for Mukran Port – both for international freight handling and for the tourist development of the island of Rügen,” emphasizes Henry Forster, managing director of Mukran Port. “A powerful, electrified rail connection lays the foundation for a competitive, sustainable port development and strengthens the entire economic region of Vorpommern.”
Mukran Port is increasingly developing into a multimodal logistics location. In addition to established ferry connections to Scandinavia, rail freight transport towards Central and Eastern Europe as well as Central Asia is gaining importance. Therefore, the expansion of the Vorpommern-Magistrale is essential to handle traffic more efficiently, quickly, and in an environmentally friendly manner.
Unlocking tourism potential – climate-friendly and international
In the tourism sector, the improved rail connection would also be a milestone for the island of Rügen. Faster, direct connections between Berlin and Rügen make climate-friendly travel more attractive – both for holiday guests and locals. Mukran Port serves as a significant gateway for international tourism: from here, there are ferry connections for tourist trips to Scandinavia as well as calls from cruise ships. A faster rail connection would meaningfully complement these offerings and make access to the island more comfortable.
Clear signal to the federal government: Decide now
With today’s special train, the participants are sending a joint signal: The region stands united behind the project – now the federal government is called to act. “The Vorpommern-Magistrale has been announced multiple times and is economically and transport policy-wise sensible. Now a binding decision is needed,” says Forster. “The federal government must deliver: with a clear commitment, secured financing, and a concrete timeline – for Rügen, for Vorpommern, for the transport transition in the northeast.”
