(Frankfurt, 18.05.2020) Due to the Corona crisis, air freight capacities remain in high demand. Lufthansa Cargo is now offering up to fourteen additional cargo flights weekly from Shenzhen to Frankfurt. The first aircraft, an Airbus A330-300 from Lufthansa, took off as scheduled from Shenzhen today. On board are approximately three million face masks and other medical protective equipment being flown to Frankfurt on behalf of the logistics company Fiege.
“Lufthansa Cargo has played an important role as a reliable partner in maintaining the stable supply chain from Asia to Germany over the past weeks. The new cargo flights from Shenzhen will allow us to make this supply chain even more flexible, ensuring that urgently needed goods arrive quickly in Germany,” says Michael Völlnagel, CEO of Fiege International Freight Forwarding.
“For Shenzhen Airport and the International Cargo Center Shenzhen, the launch of the Lufthansa connection is another step towards the internationalization of Shenzhen Bao’an Airport. We are very pleased to be able to contribute to supplying Germany with urgently needed medical goods, such as masks. It was a tremendous effort by all involved, especially the airport, to establish this new flight within fourteen days,” says Achim Plücker, Managing Director of the International Cargo Center Shenzhen.
“Lufthansa Cargo is doing everything to strengthen supply security via air transport and to maintain the supply chains. We are continuously expanding our offerings to ensure the rapid transport of large quantities of urgently needed goods,” explains Dorothea von Boxberg, Board Member for Product and Sales at Lufthansa Cargo.
Currently, all 17 cargo aircraft of Lufthansa Cargo are in continuous operation to transport medical supplies around the world. There are currently 16 flights weekly with Boeing 777F freighters, which have a standard loading capacity of around 103 tons, operating to and from mainland China. With the newly opened route to Shenzhen, a total of up to 49 weekly flights with Lufthansa passenger aircraft are also being offered for cargo transport in China. Since the cabin space of these aircraft can also be loaded with freight, this results in an average cargo capacity of around 30 tons per flight in practice. Parts of the cabin equipment have been removed from a total of ten A330-300 aircraft to accommodate a larger freight volume.
