12. January 2021GS1 Germany honors Nagel Group with the award ‘Lean and Green 1st Star’ for the logistics provider’s success in reducing CO2 emissions. The Nagel Group relies on various measures for this success. One component is the continuous modernization of the fleet. The driving personnel has also been trained accordingly.
(Cologne) Reducing the emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases, such as CO2, while simultaneously increasing efficiency in logistics processes is achievable – as demonstrated by the commitment of the Nagel Group within the Lean and Green initiative. Over the past five years, the logistics company has reduced CO2 emissions in its transport and logistics processes by more than 20 percent per transported ton of shipment weight. GS1 Germany now honors the provider of food logistics with the Lean and Green 1st Star for this achievement. The initiative certifies and recognizes ecological responsibility with a concrete reference to warehousing and logistics processes. “Our concept not only convinced during the audit but also ensures every day that we produce fewer emissions,” explains Peter Jockenhövel, Head of Sustainability at Nagel Group. “The Lean and Green 1st Star is a great confirmation of our commitment to resource conservation, but also an incentive for further improvements,” Jockenhövel adds.Package of Measures from Fleet to Combined TransportTo reduce emissions to this extent, the Nagel Group implemented a variety of different measures. A significant part of the success was the continuous modernization of the fleet. The logistics company completely switched to EURO-6 tractor units, adjusted the vehicle mix in local transport regarding payloads, and optimized route planning. Another essential success factor is the ongoing training of the driving personnel in terms of fuel-efficient and anticipatory driving by the driver and fleet team at the locations. To avoid empty kilometers, the Nagel Group monitors its daily operated line connections nationwide and converts “one-way traffic” into optimized meeting or round-trip traffic. The action plan also includes the conversion to LED lighting at the locations and investments in photovoltaic systems. Recently, the company commissioned the largest roof-mounted photovoltaic system in the Ruhr area at its Bochum branch.Nagel Group Wins for the Second Time“We sincerely congratulate the Nagel Group on this outstanding success. We are pleased to promote sustainability and environmental protection in logistics efficiently with each award – whether with the Lean and Green Award, the 1st or the 2nd Star,” congratulates Oliver Püthe, responsible for Lean and Green at GS1 Germany. The 1st Star is already the second recognition for the sustainable commitment of the Nagel Group. In 2016, the company received the Lean and Green Award for its action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Photo: © Nagel Group / Image Caption: Awarding the Nagel Group with the Lean and Green 1st Star (from left to right: Thomas Pütter/Head of Special Projects, Peter Jockenhövel/Project Manager Sustainability, Carsten Taucke/Chief Executive Officer)www.gs1.de/lean-and-green www.nagel-group.com
