23. January 2021The year 2020 at Austrian Post was characterized by volume development, the impacts of COVID-19 including lockdown, and a digitalization boost. The EBIT expectation for 2020 has fallen by around 40 million EUR and is in the range of 160 million EUR (compared to 201 million EUR in 2019). The individual divisions delivered varying results.
(Wien) The year 2020 and also the recently concluded fourth quarter were a significant challenge for Austrian Post. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring the safety and health of employees while maintaining the company’s performance has been crucial. Both have been successfully managed in recent months. The increased parcel volume in the fourth quarter posed a major logistical challenge in all regions. The reliability of service delivery was maintained. “A special thanks goes to our employees and also our postal partners. They all worked tirelessly every day even in the difficult fourth quarter and ensured that customers of Austrian Post received their shipments on time,” says General Director DI Dr. Georg Pölzl.
Letters and Advertising Mail Significantly Decreased
The development of transported letters, advertising mail, and parcels varied greatly in 2020. The volume of letters and advertising mail has significantly reduced due to the pandemic. The volume of addressed letter mail has decreased by 7% year-on-year, and media mail by 5%. The decline in advertising mail was even 12%, heavily impacted by lockdown measures in many sectors.
The development of parcel volumes was positive, with +30% in Austria, +27% in CEE, and +47% in Turkey. Especially in the fourth quarter of 2020, it was possible to manage the enormous parcel volumes with high quality in delivery. This shows how important the current capacity expansion program of Austrian Post is. Sorting and distribution capacities will also be further increased in 2021.
According to preliminary figures, the revenue of Austrian Post increased by 8.3% to 2,189 million EUR in 2020. This was also contributed by the fully consolidated Turkish company Aras Kargo since August 25, 2020, with around 100 million EUR. The revenue increase excluding Aras Kargo is thus 3.3%. The revenues of Austrian Post consist of the division of Letters & Advertising Mail with 1,222 million EUR (-7.4%), the division of Parcels & Logistics with 914 million EUR (+44.4%; +28.4% excluding Aras Kargo), and the division of Branch & Bank with 65 million EUR (-19.7%).
Figures Subject to Group Audit
According to this revenue development, an EBIT of around 160 million EUR is now expected, down from 201 million EUR in 2019. Declining results in the divisions of Letters & Advertising Mail and Branch & Bank are offset by a significant improvement in results in the division of Parcels & Logistics. Particularly in the fourth quarter, it was possible to manage logistical bottlenecks both in terms of volume and cost effectively.
The figures are subject to group audit. The final annual result for 2020 will be published on March 12, 2021.
